Astonishing composition. This appears at first to be a pleasantly harmonious shot of a person sitting beside boats -- until the eye picks up on the lines of the boats' ropes all leading to the man's head and shoulders.
I love the way the lines lead your eyes out to the boats and back in to the man's head repeatedly, like a ball bouncing up against a wall and being caught and thrown back.
It's also a little like a parachute harness and of course you could bring in ideas about travel and being on dry land or tied to travel.
The lines could also be read as thought processes or imagination -- he certainly seems to be deeply engrossed. The travel of the mind. Going out and coming in again. Like a tide. Like a boat. Like a wave.
The light on the top of his head echoes the lines of the ropes and the colours in the sea are echoed in the painted lines on the prows of the boats. The other colour, echoed in the chair and the boat, is orange -- opposite on the spectrum -- and that contrast works well for me.
Part of me wonders if it would be better if the tip of the furthest boat were not cut off, but I don't know.
