Good work on combining the two exposures. Another approach is to use some of the HDR freeware out there (e.g. Picturenaut, FDRTools) to combine the exposures into a high dynamic range image; that might produce a somewhat more natural composite (not that there's anything wrong with this one, mind you).
I love the feel of this with the moonlit clouds. The subtle colours in the clouds really add to it, too.

Thanks so much for the detailed reply.
I use HDR software often in my work and for this shot I really couldnt. Since I handheld these, the exposures and composition were quite different for each so having a program do it for me wasnt really an option.
I tried to make it more natural but something always seemed a bit off, so the mask I used for the layers ended up darkening the outline around the moon, which at the time I thought was the best compromise.
