The sun is shining, it's a warm afternoon in May. The traffic on the way home is manageable and Lisa is making good time. She has completed her workday without any special events. Just as she is locking the car in the parking lot, something happens that is to change the world forever.
A voice sounds from seemingly everywhere at once. Lisa, like probably the rest of the world, looks around in surprise, searching for the source of the voice. Only when she looks up to the sky she recognizes its origin. A face hovers over the city, and as Lisa later learns, over every inhabited spot on Earth.
"Listen to me. My name is David. Not too long ago, I was an ordinary man, like all of you. But I have discovered something. A truth that will probably shake people's view of the world. Nevertheless, I have decided not to hide this truth from mankind."
The face in the sky pauses dramatically.
"Our reality is part of a simulation."
Another pause.
"This does not diminish the importance or meaning of any life. In fact, this opens up possibilities to improve all of our lives. I have found bugs in the simulation that allow me to ... change things. Like, for example, this message to humanity."
Lisa sits down on the sidewalk and brushes a strand of her dark brown hair out of her face. She can barely breathe, crushed by the information that has just been revealed to her and everyone else.
"I live in this simulation, as do all of us. To make this life more livable, I will tackle the big problems and solve them as much as possible."
The monologue from above continues for a few more minutes with a listing of the upcoming changes and a renewed affirmation that life is nevertheless not meaningless. Lisa is only peripherally aware of this, the twenty-five year old is too busy processing what this means.
The following months contain the most dramatic changes that mankind has ever experienced. People turn away from their religion, others seek answers in it. Promised improvements occur, global warming reverses, hunger and war disappear, diseases are eradicated.
After initial uncertainty among the population, a new order gradually begins to emerge. However, many things remain unchanged. So does Lisa's job; it is late summer and she drives to work every day as before. Occasionally David checks in on the firmament and reports on the latest changes and plans for the coming weeks. It's still an unfamiliar occurrence, but nowhere near as unsettling as the first time. Lisa still looks up, but today she is more occupied with her upcoming vacation. Together with a friend, she wants to use one of the new teleporters for the first time, which are now spread all over the world and have almost completely replaced air travel.
Three days later, Lisa and her friend Patricia step onto the teleporter platform in their hometown, and just a moment later the two young women find themselves in the hustle and bustle of the South Sea island, their vacation destination. After a short cab ride, they reach their hotel. There, lured by the sun, they go directly to the beach.
The second day at the beach holds a big surprise. Lisa, with her towel thrown over her shoulder and dressed in her black bikini, arrives at the beach together with Patricia, who is also wearing her skimpy swimming outfit. Before they spread their towels they startle at an unusual sound. A person has appeared out of nowhere here on the almost deserted beach and looks around briefly. It takes a moment, but Lisa recognizes the young man's face and stops, frozen. It is that David.
"It's him." she stammers to Patricia as the man who just appeared here approaches the young women.
"Hello, you two charming beauties." he greets.
"Hi." Patricia can just barely get past her lips now that she too has recognized who is standing in front of her.
"I'm bored, I'd like to have some fun. Do you want to have fun too?" the ladies are asked.
"Yes ... yes of course." stammers Lisa incredulously.
"I see you've recognized me. Then you should also realize that by 'having fun' I mean something much more ... fantastic ... than the usual. Are you guys in anyway?"
Lisa and Patricia look at each other, first Lisa nods to which Patricia also responds with a nod.
"Yes." they both speak at the same time.
"Great, come with me to the water!" the hacker of the simulation says to the two and already starts walking. Lisa and Patricia hesitate for a moment, then Lisa rushes after him and quickly catches up.
"What ... what exactly are you up to?" she asks curiously.
"Do you want to be surprised?" he asks back with a grin and a wink.
"Hmm...all right. I'll let you surprise me."
"Very well. What about you?" now David addresses Patricia, who has also caught up.
"Is it safe?" the latter asks.
"Yes it is. I have not tested this particular hack before, but it is easier than others I have used."
"OK, I'm in. And I'll let you surprise me too." replies Patricia.
"Perfect. Then sit in the surf and we can get started."
The young women follow the instruction, sitting side by side small waves break over their ankles and calves. Unsure of what they've gotten themselves into, they smile sheepishly at each other.
"Close your eyes and don't blink." speaks the voice from directly behind the two, the voice they had otherwise only heard from the sky. Full of expectation, the attractive women sit in the surf with their eyes closed. Without further warning, the simulated reality begins to change for them. They feel an unusual heat and a strong tingling in their legs. Only a moment later, a wave of excitement runs through the two of them from head to toe. Over a loud fervent exclamation of pleasure, the young women do not directly notice that their legs melt into fish tails. Still breathing deeply, they open their eyes and see how the water now washes over their new green fish scales. Lisa, overwhelmed by the situation, lets herself fall into the sand. Patricia, on the other hand, is lifted directly by strong arms and carried a little further into the sea. After such an engaging experience, she can't help but cling to David and give him a kiss on the cheek. Gently, she is lowered into the water shortly after.
Back on the beach, David also lifts Lias and carries her into deeper water. Equally ecstatic, she also adores the man who carries her. With a smile on his face, he responds to a kiss from Lisa.
Only a moment later all three are under water, David now also with fin. He leads the new mermaids away from the beach into deeper water. Together they begin a fantastic exploration tour.
