So this is Bridie... Bridget... Brighid... the Celtic goddess of poetry, healing and smithwork-- one of my very favorite goddesses. I've been wanting to paint my own interpretation of the Celtic/pagan holiday Imbolc (February 2) for a while, and I've finally done it. Imbolc celebrates the imminent coming of spring, birth, renewal, and growth. It's Bridie's day, and the lamb she carries is another symbol of Imbolc.I know the background is dark-- it's supposed to still be winter
Painted in Photoshop with a tablet, I think around 30 hours.

This is awsoem! she's one of my favorite Celtic goddessed (for obvious reasons) i was named after my great great Grandmother, Bridget McGrath....and I'm the only person I know who goes by Bridie, though I've come across many other Bridgets.
I think I have to fave this...it's too cool of an artwork.

*flys in* ohla ^^ Well I saw the image, and wanted to comment =3 explains why Im here. This ones a very good piece and Ill be looking at your others afterwards but I cannot help but wonder if any picture could be as good as this one ^^ the looks so simple yet well defined that it almost contradicts itself with beauty ^^

Jorl as long as oyu enjoy your artwork and truly find it as great as I do ^^ thats more then plenty impressivness. Alot of artists *cough* like me *cough* undervalue there own talents and potential, thinking there arts not good. I agree that no image is perfect, but honestly who can hate such good stuff as this =3

And I think all of us are a little insecure about our work... especially when looking at the work of others and thinking "my GOD their good, I can't paint like that!" So don't undervalue yourself, cuz I truly liked your work!

Well you'd better start appreciating your own work there buddy! When I get discouraged I think of this-- I read in a magazine that some famous "artist" was selling (and profiting off of!) a piece of paper with a tea stain on it. Now, I'm not that judgemental when it comes to art... but give me a break! So, I think of it this way... is the piece I did better, more skilled than a tea stain? Um it's pretty hard not to say yes...

I wrote Katriona back about the arms if you wanna take a look... they're not crossed, they're holding the lamb above and below it's stomach... not sure how to make it more obvious

Beautiful! What a perfect face! I love the atmosphere and mood the piece. Lovely composition and color choices--and I'm so glad to hear of Imbolc. I wasn't familiar with that holiday but I am always eager to learn about the holidays of other groups of peoples.

Only one tiny little crit: the only thing I don't understand is her arms. I know they are crossed in front of her, but they don't "read" that way to me.

The arms are not actually crossed, they are holding the lamb... so the top arm is curving over the lamb's back/top of bum, and the lower one is curving under the lamb's tummy and front arm. I think being the artist I see this clearly but obviously you lousy people (JUST KIDDING!) don't... not sure how to make it more obvious. Thoughts?

I see what you mean...I kinda meant "crossed over her belly" not like "folded"...ah, forget it, it looks great! I was just giving a little crit and I don't even know if you like getting more critical feedback on your work.
But thoughts anyway...I guess because I can't see the skin of her hands (like on her left arm--which would be the right side of the image) and the black of her sleeve sort of blends into the black of her bodice...maybe because the arms are so straight across, there's no lamb showing between her arms, an arm isn't under the lamb supporting it...... It's tough because the bottom of her sleeves are white (where shadow would naturally be) so that defeats the ability to make them look rounded....
Forget it, I'm moving to another country.
Really great work--this is one of my favorite pieces you've done. Really.

Lol you're so funny... I need crit because I have no one to bounce my pics off of (well my bf helps a lot but from a non-artist point of view), though not too much! lol...
Now I swear I'm more confused though.... cuz the white you see in between her arms IS the lamb!!! her sleeves are green with the gold filmy sleeves over the upper arms, and the white in between/below is the lamb... LOL this whole thing just cracks me up. Charlie agreed with your comment so obviously this doesn't make sense to some people... yeah I didn't paint the skin of her hands cuz I'm lazy and cuz I figured I could get away with it... maybe I need to try and make the lamb's fur more pronounced in between/below her arms... or just write "LAMB--->" with the arrow pointing at it

Okay, if you want more detailed crit, I'm happy to oblige...I myself, personally, hate crit more than cold showers, but I know it's good for me, and try to swallow it like spinach (which I also hate but I know is good for me) so I'm open to crit, too.

I don't think I've made a single crit on a work on here ever. I just can't do it. Knowing how much time & effort people put into their work, I feel too horrible. I don't mind crit particularly, but only if it will make the painting go from good to great, or if it's something extremely noticeable and easily changeable. Otherwise, I'm just as happy only hearing the good stuff!
Did you see that the boy who plays Harry Potter is in a play about a guy who um *likes* horses? Guess that's one way to distance himself from HP-like roles!....
