Description
Fighting game gals from both sides of the globe about to duke it out in a back alley.Chun-Li (Street Fighter) and Mai (King of Fighters/Fatal Fury) rep the East while Sonya Blade (Mortal Kombat) and B. Orchid (Killer Instinct) team up for the West.
This was fun for a number of reasons.
One, it's been quite a while since I put this much time into a piece that heavily features finished lineart.
Two, I had to decide whom to include. Chun-Li was the only obvious choice. Mai was fairly easy to include once I gave it some thought. Sonya was a strained choice just from within the Mortal Kombat series—I feel like even though she got her own game 15 years ago, Kitana might be the more recognizable femme fatale from that series; ultimately stuck with American Sonya to contrast her with China- and Japan-hailing Chun-Li and Mai. Orchid was the toughest overall choice because… I had a tough time trying to think of Western-developed fighting games beyond MK. When I couldn't really come up with any other iconic series/female characters, I assumed that meant that Killer Instinct's Orchid was the right choice for the final spot.
In general it was just fun working with designs I've gotten accustomed to over the last 25 years.
The Street Fighter series is the only one that I'm really attached to. I'm not hardcore enough for King of Fighters… haha! Mortal Kombat was always lousy to me outside of the taboo violence at the time it originally came out. And Killer Instinct was just… blugh. Working on Orchid was probably my least favorite part of this one—her outfit is dumb and I don't get it.
Anyway, who's your pick for the fight? Or who would you have included?

Awesome piece. I agree wholeheartedly with your choices. If I were to change anything, it would be taking Mai out for Nina. The only reason I go against that is because she looks too American and it could have confused some people who's not familiar with the origins of the game.
As for your comment about Killer Instinct being "blugh"... I can understand where you're coming from if you've only played Killer Instinct 2/Gold; the original Killer Instinct, however, is one those games I would put in the 'Hall of Games'. It brought A LOT of different technicalities to fighting games and was way ahead of it's time (at least, in my opinion). Of course, seeing as how the game was created by RARE, I guess it's to be expected since they have made some of the most awesome games during it's prime. Anyway, the game included overhead (not jumping) attacks, clear wake-up moves, fake-outs, cancelable/transitional moves, a clear priority system, complete combo system, juggling, a special/token meter, combo-breakers, players can attempt to come back to life during the finishing state, and a slew of colors for each character. There's probably more things to list but this is fine. I just think that for it's time, Killer Instinct was the deepest fighting game with great characters, music, and visuals. :}
Oh yeah, I see that one/some person/people suggested someone from SkullGirls. While I absolutely LOVE the game, I don't think it has enough street cred to represent US of A.
... Now that I think about it, Morrigan Aensland could have been a really good pick for the Japan side.... I don't know who she would have replaced though, lmao. All three are among THE top to begin with!

As I was saying before my tablet betrays me again, I would've included Cammy and Sakura (SF). As for the west side, maybe Shiva from MK3? It's really hard to come up with American based fighting game characters that aren't from Mortal Kombat or Killer Instincts.

As dumb as I may sound...I don't care if you find Orchid's outfit dumb as she is a legend !
However - you did her justice with your style and it is worth the praise.

Agree and the current MK fatalities of Sonya's was pretty sucky, so its better to do the old school fatality.
(TWISTER) Sektor would eliminated all of them and walk out of there, smirking like the bastard he was before he was made into the cyborg he is currently known.

This won't be that tough of a fight with Mai's Ninjitsu vs B. Orchid's tonfas. I'd have to side with the east. Sonya could literally kill any one of the combatants because she's used to having her life on the line at all times. That said, it's a pretty hefty match up against the 'Strongest Woman in the World' Chun-Li. With lightning legs... I'd be hard pressed to believe Sonya would win unless she did her 'Kiss of Death'. Interesting choices, great pic!

Should get rid of Sonya and Orchid and put in Filla and Cerebella from Skullgirls instead.
Skullgirls is a more worthy western made fighter than MK or KI.
