Description R.P.G. (Ransack People's Gold) is the tale of four D&D/Star Wars/RPG players and their DM, who wishes he were a player. These intrepid players are, from left to right:
Kenneth, the over-achieving, yet under appreciated DM.
Adam, the guy who has a theater background but needs a girlfriend.
Barry, the munchkin power-gamer with a bad case of arrested development.
Josh, the straight-laced guy who just wants to play the game.
Kassi, Josh's homicidally-minded younger cousin, whom he regrets inviting.

*Update* I decided to change the pacing with a second panel and I threw in some of the new variant poses (so you have an idea what I've been up to). I'm debating whether or not I want to do cell shading for the cast. It is a huge addition in work (which makes further alterations harder to do) and I think the flat colors for the characters makes them stand out more (which I think is important). Let me know what you think of the change.

*Update* I've made a few mods and had enough additional poses to do a joke. I'm debating having cell shading or not (tell me what you think). Anyhow, this strip features one of the longer blocks of flavor text I've used in my campaign which includes a riddle. *FYI, read top to bottom.*

Here is a preview of the gaming table of a group whose wacky hijinks I am planning to chronicle in the form of a webcomic which I will update sporadically on DA.

Playing in Kenneth's apartment, they will do various jokes based primarily on retarded stuff I've seen in tables I've played and or run over the years. They represent a fairly wide spread of insane so I should be able to give you all a sampling of the best moments of the games I've seen.

The characters are digitally inked pencil sketches and I think I will probably use cell shading or a very simple paint job for them (I'll have to see what matches the BG best). I may have to tweak the contrast and color balance some to make it look right. The table is covered with modified images from the internet which have been run through filters and outlined.

In the comic itself I will do like Knights of the Dinner Table and recycle a handful of modified versions of the images. I'm experimenting with doing a comic which is front loaded with work (and I have been working on this for two months already). If I can pull it off and figure out the logistics then I may be able to more easily do other projects in a similar way. I wanted to be able to do a comic where I can plug in a few precreated images and concentrate on dialogue and timing by themselves.

Anyhow, if you've got ideas/suggestions for the comic or about the art drop me a line. I'll update this image as I get decent chunks of work done on this project, eventually I plan to update this to make it the first stand alone comic.

I honestly never really decided on how old the group members are. I always figured that, aside from Barry, they were all either highschool or college students (many of which live with their parents). I will say that when I was gaming with friends in highschool that a lot of my friends' parents treated them like they were in jr high.

Provided you have a GMNPC there to cast it.

Really nice description of the room, I simply love it.

In my group, one of the guys would be sleeping, another interupting with wise-crack jokes at end of every sentences and another would have blow his bains out by the end of the third sentence. :C

If only my group were as patienet as those in the comic...

Thanks. My parties always loved my box text. They would actually shut up and listen to it... and then completely ignore what NCPs told them and any clues to the plot or warnings I gave them about anything. My groups were usually pretty touch and go with roleplaying scenes but they did like my exposition and the crazy tactical combats I made. So, I suppose that all in all I have been pretty lucky in terms of getting groups whose playstyle is not too far from my own.

Grrr... Is the answer to the riddle 'light'? He bought a torch and filled the room with light?

mindflenzing In reply to thatwasrandom [2009-05-06 12:49:44 +0000 UTC]

Technically it was the torch but basically yeah. I left it open so if they figured light off the bat that the trigger was one of the mounted torches instead. Unfortunately, no matter how much I changed the wording it was apparent what the riddle was.

heh, it was kinda obvious for those of us that like riddles. Most of my party isn't though, so when we get a riddle everyone looks at me. It's a tad un-nerving.

I never know with mine. They have shown surprising resourcefulness at times dealing with puzzles but are so clueless at other times I'm not sure what to do. I have to be really clever to come up with a puzzle they have not seen the original of but still guess how hard to make it, and I'm not that good at making or solving them myself.

If you like riddles how about this one which I created but have not yet had the chance to use.

"Though some men would make or take me,
I slip through grasping hands swiftly."

Mate, i asked my party the riddle in the comic. Only one out of five said torch/light. The other answers were; "this is too hard!!", Gelatinous cube, an elephant and magic missile (damn wizard)

Is the answer 'time'?

How about this,
"i have no hinges, lock or lid, yet inside golden treasure is hid. What am i?"

I think about half my party guessed it right off the bat and one of them bitched at me (I should dig up some awful ones for him online).

Yes. I have several more if you like.

A bag of gold?

Heh, make them really hard, he'll apreciate the easy ones more then.

Heh, so do i.

It's actually an egg... but bag of gold fills the criteria, so i couldn't in good conscience deny them that one.

I found a site with riddles whose answers are achaic devices nobody's heard of in centuries.

I'm not terribly fond of riddles but I spent a couple of weeks creating two liners. This is my personal favorite I came up with.

"I am your beast your fang your claw, I hide within the deep's black maw."

After I sent it I though it might also be an egg.

Your color choices are clear enough on my screen to read clearly without cell shading.

mindflenzing In reply to ajaxx1184 [2009-01-01 00:22:33 +0000 UTC]

I think cell shading would make them pop less. Anyhow, I'll stick with flats for now (as it's less work). BTW, I've had it suggested that I occasionally throw in some alternate outfits. Do you think that would be a noticeable benefit for the comic?

Tricky if you are counting on costume as a signal of identity. But I think your faces are distinct enough. Certainly wouldn't hurt for the girl to change clothes, seeings she's the only one.

Yes, that and redbull. All my groups have been Dewaholics (except for the one which played upstairs from an adult beverage store which sold Coke in glass bottles for a buck apiece, because that rocks too hard).

Mmm...I miss Mountain Dew sooo much. (Banned from caffinated beverage last year for medical reasons.)

I'm thinking about driving to Wal-Mart right now and getting a bottle of the decaf version, which I recently discovered they sell...

mindflenzing In reply to RobinsArtist [2009-01-04 16:45:14 +0000 UTC]

For a while I decided to take a break from Dew since I was concerned that I was "needing" it more often than not to start my day.

Decaf MD? That sounds like a prank waiting to happen to me.

RobinsArtist In reply to mindflenzing [2009-01-04 16:51:18 +0000 UTC]

I'm a weirdo who actually likes it for the taste as opposed to the caffiene. Sure, I would drink it mostly while working 3rd shift, but that's because I figure if it's loaded with the stuff anyway...

Now someone needs to make caffiene free Cherry Coke and I'm set.

Right now it's only available in diet.

It is easier to read in two panels and a lot less crowded. Plus you get more facial expression and reactions.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mindflenzing In reply to Jado-the-Shadow [2008-12-31 05:33:44 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, with only one panel it was harder to follow the text and as you said there were fewer reactions. I will probably have to find a way to do panels differently though (like in more than one file). With all the layers involved per panel the files get really big really quickly.

mindflenzing In reply to Jado-the-Shadow [2009-01-01 00:59:45 +0000 UTC]

Except for the guys who do syndicated work and the guys who do Least I Could Do and Looking for Group. I updated a day late due to server problems or brain farts a few times but I didn't start missing deadlines till near the end when I started to hate doing it. But I hated the confines of a major project which I had to do every weekend. Heck, when that was happening with my Friday Night sketches I had to break for a while because I like to maintain the illusion that I am free to do what I want over the weekend.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jado-the-Shadow In reply to mindflenzing [2009-01-01 01:07:20 +0000 UTC]

I do to. There is a difference between doing it for fun or for profit. For profit, you have to keep on schedule, and if you do it for syndicate you get people helping with coloring and editing. For fun, you have to do it when you have time and only when you love it.

Yep, she's essentially the player who would run a sociopath like Eva (the longspear fighter) from my old comic Fallas (accent on the second "l"). She's easily bored and likes the payoff of roll dice things die.

mindflenzing In reply to RobinsArtist [2009-01-01 00:31:12 +0000 UTC]

She's fun. I liked the idea of playing against the stereotypes of both the veteran indignant straight man female gamer (which is really the against type which became the new stereotype) and the psycho characters run by crazy/scummy looking dudes. Having a feminine looking "normal" girl play the "gun nut" because she's bored and wants to get to what she assumes is the point of the game (kill stuff get things), makes the comic novel while allowing the typical jokes. She's the pragmatist whose meta game thinking is not rules specific (as opposed to the rules lawyer who meta games with an encyclopedic knowledge of every rule book and cannon mag article in circulation.

Yes. I'm waiting for slightly higher level heroes but I think I will throw them in the tumbler. Imagine a large rotating cylinder with spikes in the floor. Imagine trying to move and fight in this. Now imagine that your opponents are flying creatures who don't give a rat's ass if the whole room is moving. Imagine further that they carry spears and flock to jab the heroes when they fall over (or all rush past the defender when he falls and loses his marks). I fully expect them to hate my guts for this one (but not as much as for some of the other ones I have planned).

ROTF!! Ever since I watched my friend's little videos of his RP that he did, I try to think of how this would actually be. I do believe someone would not be pleased with spikes on the floor, and fly creatures. What kind of fun would it be without having something weird like that happen?
Oh the main character in Unnatural 20, died earlier this year...
