Yi
“People here always assume I can’t do anything, ‘cause I’m from the Foggy Swamp Tribe. Sure, I use the word ‘ain’t.’ But that doesn’t mean I can’t beat you.”

Origins: Yi hails from the Foggy Swamp Tribe. She headed for Republic City in search for opportunity and a better future. What she found instead was prejudice and dislike. The Foggy Swamp Tribe is known in Republic City for being backwards and for the protests during Republic City’s formation. Because of this, Yi is unable to find a job, except as a waitress in a restaurant.

Personality: After first coming to Republic City starry-eyed and innocent, she found herself being hurt and broken down, piece by piece, through various unsavory encounters. As a result, she is now harsh, using a sarcastic demeanor to get by and avoid getting hurt anymore.

Introduction to the Fire Ferrets: Bolin frequented her restaurant often, but only after Hasook quit and Yi performed her usual trick of levitating his drink does he remember she is a waterbender. He offers her a chance, and Yi takes it.

“Here’s your drink, Bolin.”
“You’re a waterbender?”
“No, it’s magic. You’ve only seen me do this a million times before.”
“Right, it’s just . . . are you any good?”
“Why do you want to know?”
“We need a waterbender for the match tomorrow.”
“And?”
“Wanna?”

Performance: Yi hit off pretty well with the Fire Ferrets, initially. After scraping by in the first game, Yi threw herself into the sport of pro-bending. Her slow Foggy Swamp style attacks throw the other competitors off, and her flowing movements make her hard to target.

Teamwork: Unfortunately, her relationship with the two brothers was a little more difficult to get through. During matches she puts aside her feelings, but outside of pro-bending, they have some major personality clashes. She gets easily annoyed at Bolin for being too silly and carefree, but that is nothing in comparison to her relationship with Mako. Mako’s tendency to be terse, demanding, and blunt reminds Yi too much of how she was treated initially coming into Republic City, and so she finds herself unwilling to get along with Mako, much less be friends. The arguments are vicious. She does, however, get along remarkably well with Pabu.
