[Background]
Yosuke was the first and only child of Takeo and Dokuka Awachizu. Both parents were professional heroes under the aliases: Surveyor and Mist Purple. Surveyor had the Quirk of creating bubbles that could be used to map out areas or to provide a minor shock to someone, while Mist Purple could create gas varying intensities from knocking someone out to full on poison (which she would rarely use to get information out of someone- with the antidote of course nearby). Although the two often bickered in the field and had opposing views they understood that if their quirks were to be merged, it could mean for a great hero. They decided to fake a relationship and have a quirk marriage and child- although hid that fact due to the stigma around it. The only person who knew about this was Enji Todoroki- a Hero who also agreed about the benefits of Quirk Marriages. To the public, Takeo and Dokuka were a happy couple with a beautiful little boy, but the moment they were in their home, they lived separate sections of the houses, having mutually agreed upon extra marital relationships and only interacted to make sure the house was taken care of and that Yosuke’s training was good enough.
The Awachizu family lived near the Todoroki home, and with Yosuke around the same age as Natsuo, they often had the kids socialize, trying to create connections for future hero work and partnerships. Yosuke and Natsuo attended the same elementary and middle school, always hanging out together and being each other’s confidants about the problems in their lives. Yosuke was Natsuo’s support when his brother was burned, his mother was sent to the institution and Toya was assumed dead from the fire-giving him a place to get away from his family, even for just a couple hours outside of school. When Yosuke was over one day after this, with Enji yelling at his children, he snapped and defended them. Yosuke yelled his lungs out at the Pro Hero- resulting in him being slapped and not warmly welcomed back into the house.
After all of this, Yosuke, hearing what he and his best friend were going through and realizing that treatment wasn’t the norm, he began to rebel against his parents: staying out past curfew, refusing to train, and trying to skip class. He had no personal drive to become a hero- even though he was expected to be one from his parents and their friends who were almost all Pro-Heroes. He was angry and felt this was the best way to get the message across that he didn’t want to be their pawn anymore. However, a little less than a year before he was to start at U.A. High School, tragedy struck. Surveyor was doing his heroic duties when the building he was fighting on collapsed underneath them- thankfully evacuated already. News outlets continuously reported on the scene and for days, Yosuke and Dokuka were left unsure what happened. Nobody was ever found but judging by the injuries he had beforehand from footage and the distance from the roof where he was to the ground, it would have been fatal so he was assumed dead.
Grief struck Yosuke since his relationship had been tumultuous with his father beforehand and felt that he needed to honour his wishes in death. Yosuke put more effort into his schooling and training, spending less time with Natsuo than he wanted. This distancing worsened when they attended U.A. and were put into separate classes. They went from spending every lunch together in first year to barely speaking when they passed in the hallway before Yosuke realized that he had lost connection with the boy he called his best friend. He felt suffocated in the hero program but continued due to the pressure to be a hero ‘just like his father’. What didn’t help either was his mother remarrying and he noticed how much happier she was and that although she didn’t intend it, that she was pulling further away from him. Deciding to bottle his feelings, Yosuke continued to work hard in his Hero classes and complete his internships. He almost quit in his Second Year, while having his internship under Endeavor (since although he did not want to go there, his teachers and classmates pushed for him to take the opportunity to work under the #2 Hero. However, Endeavor pushed the boy hard- reminding him regularly that he was nowhere near the level his father would have been and that he was lacking discipline. Even his Sidekicks noticed how cruel he was against the boy but he didn’t quit.
When he graduates, Yosuke is certified and works as a sidekick to a smaller agency under the name Pop! and found himself moving into a small apartment on his own. He devoted himself fully to being a hero, working or training every moment he was awake. His life was only heroics… and he found joy or desire in it, but continued in hopes that the spark or drive would come to him. After almost 6 months of this, Yosuke made a mistake. He ended up overwhelmed in a fight, and was subdued by the villain. When he woke up, he was in a great deal of pain and in a machine that he couldn’t get out of. There were wires and pieces of metal attached to his body that would shock his nerves or general body to produce his powers that were then subsequently controlled by the villain. The villains utilized this to commit a great deal of crime with a small group of lackeys over the course of over a week- where Yosuke’s powers were used against the heroes to stop them from getting close to their crimes. Finally, Endeavor was the hero to rescue him from the constant torment and get him out of the machine- although in rough condition (worsened by Endeavor smashing the glass and machine to get to him).
His physical injuries were bad and were treated at the hospital but what was worse was the effect on his mind. Shame and guilt consumed him from causing issues for the heroes and knowing that many civilians were injured unintentionally and he fell into a state of depression. Yosuke refused to let anyone into his apartment, spending the majority of his time laying on his bed staring at his lamp.
Natsuo heard about what happened in the news and from his father, so he went to Dokuka and got the spare key to his apartment. He let himself in and as much as Yosuke resisted at first, Natsuo helped him. He cleaned up the apartment, forced Yosuke to take a shower and to talk about everything. He stayed for a few days, getting the boy groceries and making sure he ate more than crackers or instant noodles.
It was on the third day of resistance when Yosuke finally started to open up- apologizing for ignoring Natsuo and letting everything he had let build up get off of his chest including his fear of sleeping since his dreams were just memories of the events that happened and that he couldn’t stomach the idea of having to face everyone as a hero again. So… Natsuo suggested the unthinkable for Yosuke. To go to university and not be a hero. After all, Yosuke was on his own and had a minor inheritance and savings from his job to cover the costs and did not live at home. He could be his own person. Yosuke agreed, but being too afraid to call off being a hero permanently, decided to take a sabbatical from the heroics- leaving his agency while keeping license in case it is needed.
The boys opened up more with each other, getting back to the friendship that they had always had. Except this time, there was a different spark to it. Both kept it close to their chest for a bit: Yosuke- afraid of losing his friendship over this and Natsuo- concerned to take advantage of his vulnerable friend and what would happen if his family found out. However, the more they hung out it became the cloud over their heads until finally, Yosuke confessed to Natsuo. He confessed that he probably felt this for a long time and that he’s likely always been hung up on Natsuo since they were preteens. The boys decided to start a relationship, although keeping word of it from Enji until they were certain it was going to be an endgame thing in fear of what the man would do. Both resented him, but understood the power he had.
When the school semester started (Natsuo in his second year of university and Yosuke in his first), there were many nights where Natsuo would spend the night over to hang out, do course work or to not worry about families. From the relationship, they both noticed an improvement in their attitudes and lives- encouraging each other to work on processing their childhood through counselling and their own identities.
