It's funny because everyone thought this was clop when they read the title!

I like the idea of such a debate between AJ and RD, although i believe RD could have a bit less calm face expression.
All in all - very impressive picture in its scope - shading, shadows, reflection... There are a lot of small mistakes though, they spoil the effect - a few of them are: 1) elipses on the top of the tree trunk have different shapes (while tree-rings should have similar shapes), 2) shades are a bitt off, its hard to imagine where exactly the source of light could be (AJ's front hooves and RD's head), 3) shading lines in RD's eyes seem off.

Hmm, I used the contract selection in Photoshop to make the tree rings so they should be identical in shape. Light is above and slightly to the right, not sure I see the shading inconsistencies you mention.

Check out his image - [link] - same length to height ratio of the tree rings. Your tree rings have different ratios. The end of AJ's front hooves lies right above her shadow (shadow inconsistencies kind of catches my eye, but a big part of the shadows looks great, like the hat's shadow). I feel that color border lines in RD's irises should go more towards the centers of her pupils.
I hope my pickiness doesn't annoy you too much. When i see a picture of this scope i love to admire the details.

Oh no, critique is great. I think I get what you mean by the rings, didn't realize it would do that with the technique I used. The eyes are based on the show and have that band on just the irises in the same place regardless of lighting conditions. I'm not sure I see anything wrong with Aj's shadow. The sun is up pretty high so the shadow should be close I think?

Now that i think of it - my point about AJ's shadow may have been wrong. There are more shadow inconsistencies though - the first one i noticed was that RD's tail's shadow is not jagged, also AJ's hind mane is not casting a shadow.
