I just love the concept
plus, the dark surrounding gives it just the focus it needs, and helps feeling the "gore" of it all
personally, I might've try adding a bit of blood-red to the bullet (unless it's not a bullet, but it looks like it)

red wouldn't do much good there, as it is (as far as I can tell) the part of the bullet that remains in the firearm, not the part that hits the target.
