Description collab with ~KorpiHunaja .
4 haiku by him, 4 haiku by me. to be used as background art for his upcoming d.i.y. haiku zine: med gozdom in reko (between the forest and the river).

from left to right:

over the dead mouse
it bows
a dog-rose

caught
in the cobweb
a whole constellation!

rain
swallows sing
on

the last cup of tea
a blackbird greets
the dusk

by ~KorpiHunaja

summer rain
puddles overflow with
the smiling sky

maple leaf in the thick book,
remains of autumn.

the mighty tree
bows to the persistent wind.
the grass blades wave.

mom's smile
and szechuan tofu-
my evening feast.

by me, *moyanII .

all translations into japanese are done by me.

I'm not sure. It's just a translation of the poet's experience.
I'm not native Japanese.

...I'm just butting in because I'm so proud I understood all of that (with the aid of rikaichan).

Really, though, beautiful calligraphy! ใ‚„ใฃใฑใ‚Šใ€‚That ใƒก on the third to last row is the most beautiful of ใƒกs...
I am also particularly fond of the animal in the fourth to last row. I can't read the kanji; I just assume that all kanji with four legs beneath a line are animals.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

moyanII In reply to Momokuren [2008-01-31 00:55:50 +0000 UTC]

four dots below a kanji usually mean 'fire'. hehe.
but yea, in this case that's a bird kuro uta dori: the blackbird which sings sweet songs.

last row last word which is 'mouse' there are some really clear representation of legs, even with claws.
do you see what i see?

I had to blow it up to size 48, but I can see. Kanji tends to stretch things a bit.

moyanII In reply to Momokuren [2008-02-01 11:16:51 +0000 UTC]

stylised line drawings actually, very artistic.

Momokuren In reply to moyanII [2008-02-01 20:10:34 +0000 UTC]

I know that they began fairly accurate, but some kanji have changed so much over time that there's no longer any sensible way to see the picture in them. Most of the time, you can make out a picture if you're told what it is, but not the other way around.
Take ๅฅ, for example. It makes sense that "phrase" is a mouth bound up, but without knowing any kanji in the first place there's no way to figure it out.
็ซ looks like fire to me and ๆฐด looks like water, but before I learned them someone could have told me that ๆฐด was fire and ็ซ was water and it would make as much sense.
I love kanji but they are not always so-perfect.

that's why we need teacher and go to school.
(that's what i told my students when those kids asked why they have to go to school )

Momokuren In reply to moyanII [2008-02-02 05:19:46 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I guess if you could know what every kanji meant just by looking at it, they wouldn't be very easy to write and wouldn't be so much of an art form.

I found a super-cool book called Remembering the Kanji. I'm learning about 100 kanji a week with it, but I hope I can start learning faster soon. It's a pretty amazing book.

as chinese we know at least 5000 commonly used kanji by heart.
you'll do well with such a willingness and eagerness to learn, soon you can learn haiku from siragiku san like i do.
have you browsed his gallery yet?
