Description I never know if I must call these tower or turrets.

Anyway, this is the main tower of the Yamato I am modeling for my demo reel. It has a lot of little details and a pretty high poly count but I like the result so far. One thing that bug me though, is that the base holding the 25 mm aa turrets must be flat while the top of the main canon is inclined. My references didn't really help me on this puzzle so I decided to add some pipes and structures to keep the base flat and the top angled. I might change that latter. Also, the base of the cannons(the round thing that comes into the main structure) is supposed to be some kind of fabric material and I haven't decided how I will do it so far so this part isn't finished.

And that is pretty much all, hope you like it, your comments/critics are welcome and I wish you a great day and a half.

Also how'd you get that fricken' awesome lighting? If you look at my stuff, you'll see I lack the skills for proper lighting.

Hm... if I'm right, I only have an ambient occlusion for this shot.... no, I also have environment lighting.

Go in the world panel, check the ambient occlusion checkbox, let it to multiply and drag all to 1. This will create the dark contour around pieces that are near.
Just below that, check the Environment lighting check box and set a value of 1 (might have to play with that). Let it to white. This will add a global unified lighting to your scene.

Note that there is no lights in this lighting setup. I use this to show models as it light everything nicely and shows all the details but I would not recommend it for a final render as it is nowhere near how lighting works in real life. Hope it helped you.

Very well done!

Question:1. How long have you been modeling? 2. How long did it take to make this?

Pretty nice job, ive been working on building a H-class German battleship of my own spent about the last two weeks just on turrets so i can appreciate the hard work put into this piece. Nice details I do like how you did the aa turrets.

Yeaaah... I think it could indeed be called like this. Heard it sometime, not sure if its their official name though. =/ That said, I don't even know if there is any official name for that.^^'

Nice progress. This one will be awesome, I hope you will find the time (and computing power, lol! ) to finish it.

For the fabric part where the cannon enters the turret - you can try a displace modifier (separate vertex group, or split into another object, if you need more subdivs) - I find that musgrave noise works well for such wrinkled look.

Thanks! I sure hope to finish it too.^^

I shall try the displace modifier once I get the motivation to finish this part, but I'll probably do the rest of the ship before that.^^

btw, I once played with the idea of modeling this exact same ship. But the task seemed too daunting at the time (still is ), so I didn't get past reference gathering. I could send you my references pack (photo, models, drawings), maybe there are some pics you don't have yet. Drop me a PM, if you are interested.
