Description ...I don't know why I drew this. I guess I was technically experimenting with the combination of gray and colored markers, but really, all this does is make me rather uncomfortable. It is my feeling that Hodur did not want to live, so this picture would convey a strange feeling.

This is hauntingly beautiful. Your work with markers is so masterful. Is this from a particular story?

Yes, it's from the Eddas.

Baldur is killed under dubious circumstances by his brother Hod, and then Hod is killed by their brother Vali for revenge. Then Baldur forgives Hod in the underworld.

How do you get the markers to obey you. Also congratulations one being one of the few people who hasn't a blindfold on Hodr (it drives me mad when people do )

I still feel like I can't control my markers... :/

Sometimes I do draw him blindfolded, but generally I avoid that because I don't think that's how he really looks.

Don't worry, I feel the same way about coloured pencils.

*sniff* poor Holdr.

This is truly an eerie work, but I would say it's important to look at all aspects of the Aesir, light and dark, and this tells of the tragedy surrounding the blind god of darkness.... and so I loves it.

Hah-hah, after watching the 'opera' Gurre Leder...I know now that "tod" means "death"- and therefore...uhm, yeah. I understand the German for once. Go me.

Ahhh...the atmosphere is kick-a.

Cool! German is much like English, so I'm sure you'd understand much more German than you'd think. Though I'm sure we've already had this conversation on a bus somewhere before.

Thank you!

Nice character stylization. It's subtle and well rendered. Lovely muted colors and fine design. The expression of the face is serene and thoughtful. Great work with the sword.

Ahh, it's one of my favorites. Haven't seen it in awhile--thanks for reminding me to watch it again sometime!

Have you read the book? What'd you think of it?

I loved the book. It's definitely different, but the overall atmosphere and spirit were well captured in the film.

My opinion as well. I read the book after seeing the movie, so I'm much more biased towards the film, but both are amazing.

Thank you! I think the gray really darkens the picture. I'll be using more gray in the future when necessary.

i realize, of course, that occasionally some criticism might help you in new directions, but i have none. nope. not a one. however i do have bucketfuls of fangirlish praise, which at present i think it prudent not to allow myself to type. go you!

ack, and yet some people's came out SO AGONIZINGLY PERFECT. i remember someone had theirs perfectly inked and it looked so beautiful and so professional that i wanted to cry in shame and envy.

he was sleeping, was he? i never sought him out; i just know that after giving a brief lecture he'd flee the classroom as though someone had strapped a schrapnel bomb to the ceiling or something. Krystal (do you remember her?) kept saying she saw him in the cafeteria downstairs, whenever she went--but every time i did, he wasn't there.

Yeah, I remember her; she's here on dA somewhere... I forget how to spell her username, though.

I wasn't paying much attention to him, either. I think he looked hungover or depressed as hell half the time, though. Poor sonofabitch.

Cool.

There's a lot of suck cropped out of this. I royally fucked up the hilt of the sword but didn't want to crop the mistletoe too much, which is why there's that weird gray thing on the side.

...Maybe that's because Tolkien stole everything from the Norse lore?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Carat In reply to munashiibennu [2006-08-10 04:22:38 +0000 UTC]

i'd heard somewhere before that Tolkien used good-sized chunks of the Norse legends as the building-blocks for his worlds. i haven't read many of them (either Tolkien or the Norse legends) so i cannot say how heavily he borrowed. but in this department i would take your word over anyone else's.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

munashiibennu In reply to Carat [2006-08-10 04:30:46 +0000 UTC]

"Good-sized chunks" is the right phrase, I think. The concept of "Middle Earth" (Midgard), dwarves, elves, trolls--all that comes from the Norse lore. And his Elvish language, from what I've seen, is pretty much Icelandic written in runes.

Basically, my opinion on Tolkien is that he owes Odin royalties.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Mohnchen In reply to munashiibennu [2010-07-10 00:11:40 +0000 UTC]

Elvish was heavily influenced by Finnish/Welsh, both non-Germanic languages. The thematic content of Tolkien's works however are heavily Norse influenced, which is probably why I am so fascinated by Norse mythology now.

Carat In reply to munashiibennu [2006-08-10 04:36:10 +0000 UTC]

let me rephrase: cover them so that no one besides yourself notices.
don't beat yourself with bricks over flaws! later on, maybe in a few decades, when someone rediscovers your old works, the flaws might become signs of authenticity, or even of quality, of marks of your style.

or perhaps not. but hey! no one noticed any of the minor flaws made by previous great art-geniuses, not to the point where they declare them non-geniuses.
i had a point. i think i blunted it.

munashiibennu In reply to Carat [2006-08-10 04:56:56 +0000 UTC]

Eh, I can't help but notice them; it's what drives me to not make the same mistake twice. I'm always making new mistakes, at least.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Carat In reply to munashiibennu [2006-08-10 10:59:31 +0000 UTC]

mistakes are how people learn, whether they make them themselves or someone else makes them for them. the difference between types of people is that some learn from the mistakes and some don't.

o god, i have GOT to stop speaking in general terms. i meant "Well, hey, you're pretty damn good now, and at least you're improving on the mistakes you *do* make!"
