Description Mid Early Evening 3rd July 2013~
Here's a small mural of the outside and inside of the Hyperion. Her propellers are complete, except for the bicycle chains to drive them, and engines of course, however the middle panel gives you a very nice view of the interior of the Gondola of the Hyperion, furnished in either a reddish oak or possibly cherry wood finish, with a maps and charts table to the rear where Sir Anthony seems to spend most of this time brooding, and while the movie depicted a single steering wheel for the captain to manipulate, any true dirigible would need another to control accent and decent, so I gave the Hyperion an elevator wheel to bring some logic to the movie fantasy realm.

The roof of the gondola, and the floor to the engineering catwalk above have a hole cut into them so that I may place a ladder to connect the gondola below with the upper structure. The sides of the engineering deck are covered in canvas colored white, and you can see the stretched nature of the cotton canvas rather clearly, I hope, in the top most close-up view.

I am currently looking for some decent small engine images to mock up the power behind the Hyperion, and once I find something that looks similar to the tilted variety found in the movie I shall model them and install them in the back part of the upper structure, just ahead of the tail fins. And after that I can make the chain drives, the sprockets gears and things, and then begin work on the kaboodle of wires and rigging ropes that will tie the gondola and engineering deck to the balloon above.

For simplicity and to cut down on the polygon count, I shall use simple blocks or triangles for the thicker rigging ropes while the thinner wires could be made out of simple non-faced lines. And forget about rivets!! There would be too many of them that even using a simple six sided cube to represent a simple rivet would push the total polygon count to ludicrous levels.

Early morning 3rd July 2013~
Viva la France!
Hyperion now has her French Flag emblem on her upper fin on both sides, as well as new canvas bits cladding the sides of the upper gondola, and a slight tweak done to her fins both front and back to balance out the appearance.

Really late evening update 2nd July 2013~

On a curious note, it is not until I have had easy manipulation of a replica of the Hyperion that I understand why the Viking, or Nordman were so afraid of this ship as it silently floated up and out of the "Bay Of Whales" thinking that the damaged Hyperion was a ghost of a dead whale rising from the depths of Holle to devour them!!

Just look at this viewing angel!! Does not the white tabs, the triangle bits that anchor the balloon to the frame look like teeth, indeed the maw of a "Ghost Whale" rising out of hell to eat yuuuuuu!

On a more serious note however, this is yet another update to my preview art as I continue work on the Hyperion Airship.

And here is my previous posting for comparison [link]

End update Late late late in the night on 2nd July 2013~

Update 2nd July 2013 evening~
Just did this and things are coming along nicely I think. I was surprised how well the outlining for the balloon worked out. There aren't any missing bits accidentally cut out, or rude additional orphan lines that would unnecessarily add bits to the file size either. The nose fins now have their red-white-blue French Insignia, and later I'll make the borders that look like lace along the bottom of the red parts to the balloon along the black parts to finish it off. And then I can work on the motors, which frankly speaking are going to be a chore to hunt down for period correctness. XDD

Also here is what I hope is a working link to my Stash for views of the previous submission for comparison. [link]

End edit 2nd July 2013~

As usual whenever I lack sufficient time on my hands to do anything hand drawn I amuse myself with some quick 3D work.

This is an old subject that has been sitting around for ages, but I've dusted it off and resuming construction of the Hyperion, a compact French Rigid Airship featured in one of Disney's old live action classics staring former Good Morning America host, David Hartman as Professor Iverson, Jacques Marin as Captain Brieux, and Donald Sinden as business mogul Sir Anthony Ross whom purchases said airship lock, stock, and barrel from Captain Brieux in order to fly his expedition to the Arctic in search of Sir Ross' missing son, Donald Ross played by David Gwillim.

The Hyperion Airship played such a prominent roll in the movie that it became iconic as much as say the Goodyear Blimp, or even the Hindenburg, so much so that a large movie prop likeness of the Hyperion graces the front of a cafe with the same name Hyperion, at Disneyland in Paris France. Noting such, as well as noting a lack of a decent model of the Hyperion in the 3Dwarehouse, I've taken it upon myself as a helium head to make a model for everyone to enjoy, and this is the current state of my efforts.

There are a few issues to be sorted out, such as the height of the balloon being too low and close to the gondola, as well as a lack of rope rigging needed to tie the balloon to the structure, but that can be sorted out easily enough. The lack of engines and propellers at this point cannot be helped.. I lack any decent reference images, save for an old VHS tape of said movie which I'm not willing to run too much and degrade the quality of the recoding, so picking out time-period-accurate power plant for this ship is somewhat problematic... And then there is the issue of decorative bits which the Disney art crew generously adored the movie prop with that needs to be modeled, such as fancy gold borders around each window, some fancy laminated wood propellers, and lots and lot of rivets and trusses between each girder... girder work that would make Bender of Futurama quite pleased if he saw it. XDD

For now though I hope you guys like this rendering, which as with the 3D model will be updated as I work on it.

Also please don't smoke around her as Hyperion is being worked on?... Hydrogen has a nasty habit of going when around sparks! xP

Wow, I don't believe this.  I tripped across this while searching Disney items.  I've been trying to remember the name of this movie for years and finding this work of yours just ended the quest happily.

The island at the top of the world is a highly underappreciated, bordering on "cult classic" tale by the House of Mouse, back in the day when they were on their game, and their stuff was GOLDEN.

It all makes sense to me now that I think back on it. Why would the art department make the tabs that bind the balloon to the frame of the ship out of triangles, and have them so white. They had that scene similar to my depiction in the movie well thought out.

Imagine this silently raising up out of an isolated bay, walled in on all sides with cliff faces, catching an up-draft of winds and floating up over the glaciers to loom over the encampment of Viking like a demon - ghost whale, raising from the dead to devour them!

And thank you muchly, Groovy gal!

Nah not coincidence at all. I figured that some folks might remember that scene from the movie the most, so I posed the model about as close to the real scene as I could, and then rendered it.

Why thank you Foxy!

Admittedly I fudged a shat ton of stuff, but so did Disney's art crew so I have a valid excuse just to go nuts and make things artsy and however I want.

Would be interested to see what you come up with.
