Description this is kind of a test. a drew a figure walking, then added the rain which is white acrylic ink. after scaning the piece of cardboard i made everything, but the rain, black. this left me with a cool effect, i think. it brings sin city to mind. i would really like to hear your guys thoughts on this and what might make it better. i will tell you that the white mess up top, was an accident ...then i tried to fix it.
any comments and critique are appreciated. thank you :}

Hmm I've just been trying to figure it out... how'd you get to here from the original? I know you edited it in Photoshop or whatever, but how did you actually do it (if you can remember the steps!)? Adjust the threshold? Change the contrast a zillion times?

It's so good though. Both versions. I just love them so much. Your work is a huge inspiration, and I'm hoping to do a few pieces in your style some day, and of course I'll attribute it to you too.

that is one of the greatest compliments i could hope to receive . thank you.

from the original scan i did this (or close to it): [link]
i used this tool to the extremes, making midtones black, and leaving whites the same. Gimp is a free photoshop like program, and has an identical tool. the "levels" adjustment does a very similar thing. it's a one step process. however you could do it a number of ways, using color select, etc.

i use the curves tool on every single image i scan. just not to this extreme.

I think the 'white mess' up there kinda looks like shattered glass; like he was standing in an abandoned building with a glass skylight above him. But then it started raining so hard that the glass just shattered. That, or it started raining harder. Either way, the effect is amazing. I love it!

i guess i'm thinking of the epic entrances that batman makes sometimes, like falling through a glass ceiling. that's what i thought of. but that's just me.
i'm glad you like it!

this is sort of effing brilliant, I've really gotten in to splatter painting recently, and this is great, I love how he only appears visably by rain

I've always wondered about this (it's one of my favourites from all of your works):

Did you sketch the figure first, then ink it just in certain places to use negative space? I'm just wondering because I've always wanted to do something like this.

i did the whole figure, inked it and everything. then when adjusting contrast in photoshop, i noticed how good the white looked on it's own. that was it! kindof an accident.
glad you like it!

Oh wow, I adore this, Sin City's what immediately popped into my head It's great, really.

Though you are looking for suggestions, so here goes. Uhm, you could put colour in just the eyes, for a cool contrast, and if you want to draw a street lamp you could pass off the white "mess" (which I though were the moon rays) as the light from said street lamp, that your person is maybe looking at?

Great job

great suggestions! honestly, this style has been far from my mind for some time. now that you've left such a thoughtful comment however, it's got me thinking of all other kinds of cool things to do with this. so... thanks! first new thought: lightning done properly in this style would be ridiculously epic.

I think what makes me enjoy this piece more than the original is because your mind fills in the blanks instead of you painting the rest of it. The actual person walking doesn't do enough justice for this piece. so letting your brain fill in the rest gives you more imagination. PS. i'm using this as my background for my phone. (:

This is just too cool man.

That stream of water that appears to flow from the right eye looks off. It looks rather flat where the jawline and curves of the neck are.

word. it's probably because i intended the figure to be visible. i will be more careful if i do this again. i know i can do better.
