Description This was a planned piece that I never got to. I really love the Joker, and this version was my Joker when I was a kid. Mark Hamill took everything Jack Nicholson had done and improved upon it. Arguably the most iconic version of the character, and the actor who played him the longest and in the most forms of media.

On the Napier side, I found the screen caps from Mask of the Phantasm, and once I saw it, I got the initial sketch then pulled up a Jack Nicholson pic, and did a bit of tweaking. I wanted to bring that insanity, and just the beautiful smile that he brandished so many times on screen. This is probably my personal favorite Duality for the DCAU series.

I prefer the BTAS Joker more than any others, mainly because he's a Cartoon Show Big Bad which is my favourite archetype. Additionally being a cartoon, despite clearly has serious elements BTAS is more lighthearted than many other Batman media, which is too serious to my taste. While Jerome Valeska is good, I heard that he was originally used only for 1 episode, and if that's true I could only say it's such a clever decision NOT to make him a Big Bad by introducing his twin brother NEAR THE END (no, I really mean it, not sarcarm).
Though I prefer BTAS Joker, I prefer his design in JL and Return of the Joker more.

Yeah the Jerome thing in Gotham was absurd at points, but he still was a great Joker. Same with Jeremiah.

I like the idea that Napier killed the Waynes. For the narrative of the 89 Batman film it worked, and it also worked in some forms of media where they used this version of Joker. I was hoping the New 52 would take a cue from this and make it canon and maybe make Joe Chill an alias of Napier but alas. I honestly found the New 52 version underwhelming till they got to the DOTF Arc.

I tend to prefer the versions of Joker that were evil even before they became clowns. The idea that a normal, average citizen could become the worst monster who ever lived, just from one bad day is interesting, but not quite as believable as having an already bad man made much, much worse!

OptimumBuster In reply to JJWS92 [2019-01-23 16:43:41 +0000 UTC]

I agree. As cartoony as Nicholson's Joker was at times, he felt the most real in terms of just being a evil SOB.

Same here. To me joker being a simple mob enforcer who is below the bottom to becoming like you said a legendary monster is a tale that reminds me of fallout new Vegas with the courier.

I took a bit of creative license. There weren't many pics to go off of from the scene from the film, so I used Nicholson as a template.

What I love about both Nicholson and DCAU takes on Joker is that he was never a good guy who went insane but had always been a nasty murderous piece of sh!t. That's the only kind of origin story I approve for the Joker.

This pic is beautiful. FAVE

Kudos on giving "Jack" that dark, menacing leer right in our face. Even though I know it's digital, the shadows and colors are rendered so well that I feel as if I'm looking at a deleted scene by Warner Bros. itself. Except it doesn't exist.

Also, now that you've put them side-by-side, I've just noticed something shocking... Joker lost his eyebrows.

That's creepy.

OptimumBuster In reply to Crisis-Comics [2017-05-31 23:34:53 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much. I had not noticed the eyebrows until now TBH. The shading was important as it helped to distinguish the very bright Joker from the dark colors of Jack. If you don't have that contrast the pic doesn't work. Thanks again for the kind words.

Just watched the most of DCAU since last Fall-Winter. It's cool that they made lots of Killing Joke references that goes way over the children's heads. Even the episode where Joker tries to ruin the reputation of very famous comedians in the in-universe show.

The show kinda got stale in the 3rd season though, I'll admit it myself. As well as episodes that weren't that good to what many would think.. Like the Terrible Trio, which actually got a decent reboot as they themselves appear in the 2004 incarnation which is very rare when future incarnations of popular media made a remake of a really bad episode. But the 4th season unfortunately, got my ultimate interest, only to last only one and never more.Β

Kinda sucks that they didn't have Joker with any mentionings of his pregnant wife. True, it is a possible lie, but that's how I see Joker seeing that he is human, and not some Superman villain in disguise or something. Or maybe they're afraid of turning Joker into Mr. freeze. Dunno. I still have yet to see Return of the Joker.

Yeah by Season 3 it felt like they were afraid to change the formula. I always thought Dick should have exited in season 2 going to college and have Jason Todd come in. But regardless I do like Tim Drake's robin in the show even though he seemed useless in some of his later episodes.

NathanArtDumpGround In reply to OptimumBuster [2017-06-01 00:23:19 +0000 UTC]

Yup. And that's the weird thing that happened to the "Robin" line. Todd never appeared which sucks because it would've been interesting to see an "Antihero" Robin. (He was the Red Hood after all) And yeah, I do think that some of the episodes of Drake kinda made him useless, if not forced. (Beware of the Creeper) Still, the Creeper is a one shot hero which sucks so much. Jeff Bennett is amazing voicing him, and I could tell he had a lot of fun with him. Hoping he appears in Justice League Action and Jeff Bennett reprise his role.

There are so many characters that were tossed aside in the DCAU as one offs. I remember how bummed that we got Kyle and John but never Hal or Guy. Not to mention we never got any indication as to what happened to Barry after he appeared in Superman TAS. I'd like to hope a Crisis level event happened at some point.
