$zilla774 <- that dude!He and I sat down in front of a computer for the first time in history this morning and had the most detailed design conversation in history.
It was completely cool.
We started messing with some CSS to make the header as small as possible to see to-what-extent it could work.
Making the top header smaller is nice because it shows more thumbnails on-screen when you arrive, instead of pushing them down.
It's very-much a sketch (and the bottom part is entirely robbed from $starvingartist and $mccann 's new browsepage design!)
But it's groovy.

Wow. It looks good, I think the DA logo is a little small and unnoticeable. But apart from that brilliant.

I think you can clip out the search magnifying glass icon and use it to replace the "Go" text. The "Subscribed" note...we probably don't need to see it all the time. I appreciate the loss of the sidebars.
The icons used in the header need a more unified style between them, in my eyes: preferably like the logo.
A great rough draft; the overall composition and the logo area are especially nice.

besides the fact that Im missing the friends button this version is amazing, way better then the actual one and a REAL improovement of the dA design since its still the old, handy deviantart bar but in a compressed and stylish version. I'd really request to make a second beta version which is like this design (with friends button xD)

Unlike others, I actually like the smaller top-area and different logo. Especially thhe grunge/splatter in the background. The dividing on the navigation menu is a good idea too.
I think the user area on the right is good, because quite a few other places I've seen or go to also place that kind of information in the same area. By it being aligned differently to the norm, it grabs more attention.
My only irk is shrinking the drop-down next to the search - changing 'All deviations' to 'Art'. The size it has at the moment is good.
I'd also suggest an extra content filter or search function, but that's less design and more feature. XD

Lack of a navigation menu could be seen as an issue
I'm not entirely sure about this, it seems to be a return to the square-edges of v5 with the gradient fills of v6. Losing the pixel icons and rounded corners makes it seem more formal and slightly less welcoming and homely in a strange way.

Remove the ridiculously obtrusive ads while browsing and I'll be happy. Leave some ads on (Obviously) but not the HUGE ones.

Can you also put MOAR sorting links? "Newest" and "Popular" are not enough. How about add "Most Critiqued", "Most Commented", and (for subbies only) "Oldest", please!

1. Looks More Web 2.0 Like!
2. I think the Search Looks Good There but another place you could put it is under the collect button or at the top of the sidebar.
3. I love the idea of a smaller4 header and I think that is a good idea which is really good if you have a netbook!
4. I love how it tells you what type of messages you have!

I finally got around to commenting on this... Hopefully the influx of comments has died down now after this being featured on :#hq:!
It's an interesting concept, but it does bring up a lot of concerns with me. There are the obvious omissions that everyone has mentioned, like the Friends button, navigation and so on... And overall, the page just doesn't have the deviantART feel any more. dA has always had the bubble-container look, even since v4, and it works nicely. The intention was to compact the header, of course, but this is too extreme and the lack of definition of each area with said bubble-views makes it look flat and disorganised.
I also think dA should steer clear of orange. Blue was an acceptable route to go down when emphasis was needed, and the occasional subscriber purple seems to work better than one would predict, but orange is a but no-no - especially this dull browny orange.
I also wonder about the giant categories sidebar. You said you want to see as much art as possible. When that's always on the side, you're potentially losing a whole column of thumbs. I liked the old iPod menu myself. I'm aware of the need to make the categories list prominent so people use it, but perhaps it could be minimised (shameless: deviantTIDY has an option for this, albeit an entirely CSS-based solution).
I hope to respond with a concept of my own soon. If you have any more recent prototypes, feel free to note me or publish them!

i second . also if we lose the personalized navigation bar it would really hinder the fast searching and mobility of the site like said. (i realize that its just a rough draft, just wanted to voice my opinion) i like the way the message stuff is set up. overall its great, awesome and sleek.

To be honest, I think it looks a little weird with such a tiny header. While the version that is there now could be shrunk a little, I don't think it's a bad size at all - it looks clean this way. However, on the new design, it almost looks as though something wasn't allowed for in the design and so it had to be all squished up to allow for it in the code
