Description My new Brazilian Black tarantula sling who I named Sirius. Got him/her (still way too little to tell) yesterday at a herptile show. He's bit more active then my Chaco Golden Knee but just as docile. The adults of this species are a solid velvet black. But right now at the size of a penny, he's this uniform dark chocolate brown.

Oh and how I got the name. If you are a Harry Potter fan you probably all ready know. Bu to those that don't....he is named after Sirius Black, Harry Potter's Godfather in the series.

Yeah very small still. I will try to get a photo of him on a penny this week. I also got a Curly Hair, who is about the same size, and a Red Rump (bigger...about the size of a US Half Dollar) last Friday. The Red Rump just molted yesterday too and the red is really coming through nicely. Will see if I can get a good photo of them as well up soon.

I can't wait to see how Sirius will look! How long till they're full grown and how can you tell their gender? Just curious.

PaganFireSnake In reply to PhantomDragon09 [2012-06-11 23:50:26 +0000 UTC]

It depends on the species. Most take 4-5 yrs. This species can take up to 8 yrs! And males usually don't live long past maturity...usually only another yr. But females can live for quite longer. Again depending on the species, some females can live to be as old as 20 yrs or more.

hmm.. cool. I didn't know they could live so long!! I used to have a horrible fear of spiders but I've recently grown to appreciate them and really like them... they still scare me when I find them in my bed hiding in the covers... but I no longer squish them! haha

I love spiders but I think finding one in my bed unexpectedly would make me jump. I do keep my tarantulas in my bedroom...but they are in escape proof containers!

I don't think I'd ever keep a spider... but someday I really want a snake or other reptile of some kind haha.

Thank you. I am really falling in love with tarantulas. I've always liked spiders but getting to have them as pets really opened my eyes to how cool they truly are. A lot more to them then most give them credit for.

You're welcome. For some reason every house I've lived in has been inhabited by a fuzzy jumper spider. I enjoy the company of those little guys, and they help keep the population of insects (flies and mosquitoes) that get into the house to a minimum.

Spiders are truly fascinating creatures.

PaganFireSnake In reply to DaybreaksDawn [2012-06-12 16:34:57 +0000 UTC]

Jumpers in general seem to be pretty wide spread. Though I have more in the house I am in right now, then I have seen when I lived with my mom or other places. But I am also on a lake and there are a lot of other insects so that could be why there are so many here. They really are cool spiders to watch and I also like that they help to keep the number of harmless insects down.

Thank you. Glad I got the Brazilian Black. I have heard from quite a few that they make great T's to keep. Hardly, they get big and are docile.

Thank you and I am very happy I got him. It was him or a Mexican Red Knee who was a bit bigger. Hard choice but I went with the Brazilian Black b/c I prefer to get any animal as young as possible. So it's easier for it to get used to me and it hasn't learned any bad habits yet. Plus I've been wanting a Brazilian more then the Red Knee so it was the Brazilian for me. Very cute little spider and looking forward to seeing it grow.

Oh yeah, I may end up buying me a B. Smithi female for my birthday, since they are so expensive...either that or a female Ball Python. Not sure yet.

You're welcome!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PaganFireSnake In reply to ArachnoWolf [2012-06-19 01:47:28 +0000 UTC]

If you like pretty tarantulas that usually are easy to handle the B. Smithi's are nice. I prob will eventually get one of them as well. I have 4 T's now...just got two more this past Friday...a Red Rump and a Curly Hair. The Red Rump is still young but the red is starting to come through and I have to say this spider is STUNNING!!! He/she just molted too yesterday and once it hardens up more I will get a nice photo of that T, and the Curly Hair up as well.
Now in deciding which to get...a T or a Ball python that is a hard one! I would normally say go with the BP but with owning T's and really getting to experience what they are like...it's a tough call now. The T's can be more affordable and easier to house. And though both are usually easy to handle, Ball Pythons seem to tolerate handling better then T's do. Plus you have to be more careful with handling T's since even a short fall of a few inches can really injure them. So aside from T's being a tad bit more sensitive and delicate I'd say they are about as good a pet as Ball Pythons.

Just got me an OBT, he ate three crickets up real fast (pinheads), well, he/she... its like an inch. My first old world species, excited about it! Yeah, I was thinking of getting a female B. smithi for my Birthday.

I have two boy Ball Pythons! I plan on starting a breeding business actually. For now they are just lovely companions Love my boys! They get lots of kisses

Omg he is so cute <3 I just got my first tarantula about a week ago, a mexican curly hair and he/she is so adorable I held him for the first time yesterday and he is so chill. Didn't kick hairs or anything. Still a baby too so I can't wait to see him grow. Also getting a Brazilian Rainbow Boa and a big female Kenyan Sand Boa this week <3

Oh congrats on your newest addition...and one the ones you will be getting soon too. I am getting a Curly Hair as well...should be here on Thurs. I paid for him, along with a Red Rump, back in Dec but it's been way too cold to have them shipped until now. So excited about FINALLY get those two soon! How big is your Curly Hair?

Kavyrie In reply to PaganFireSnake [2012-06-11 16:53:55 +0000 UTC]

I only paid $2 for my curly hair xD I think with his/her legs he is as long as a quarter.

A person actually found a little tarantula in their grapes from Stop and Shop! A few weeks ago. [link] Any idea on what kind she could be? She is about the size of a quarter right now. I think they said the grapes are from Chile...

Awe your T sounds really cute. They truly are adorable as babies.

And OMG found one in their grapes from a Stop and Shop? Wish that was me that found it! It's really hard to say what species that is...still little and they can be a bit difficult to tell when they are small. And it really could have come from anywhere. It could have gotten on the grapes from a shipment of something else too. What color is it exactly? It looks like there is some blue but I don't know if that is just the lighting or not....

Thank you. With every tarantula I add to my collection the more hooked I get on them. They are so cool and I also think very cute. Some other spider species maybe not so much but the T's, with those fuzzy bodies of theirs and quite a few of them being so docile I can't help but fall in love with them. But all spiders I think are beautiful in their own right.

Thank you. And OMG Sirius is so FAT! I got him from the same tarantula breeder I got Samhain from b/c all of her animals are very well feed and healthy. You don't see a single one that has a small abdomen or bald spot on it (if its a species that kicks off it's hairs if it feels threatened). I am also getting two other T's in a few days, from a different breeder who is shipping them too me. A Red Rump and a Curly Hair...I am SO hooked on these spiders now!

PaganFireSnake In reply to Wolfyone [2012-06-11 14:22:48 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah any animal I own or have owned I do get pretty into them. I've always liked spiders in general but only recently got into keeping them as pets. It's definitely made me respect them more and see there is more to them then most give them credit for. It's one thing to have a spider that occupies a spot in or around your home. But another to have a captive one where you get to see things you may not ever see with a wild one...like molting, feeding, it cleaning itself...so interesting to watch. Not to mention they really are beautiful. Especially with tarantulas...if you get a baby, 9 times out of 10, the baby does not look like the adult. So as it grows you get to see the transformation from one molt to the next. It's been pretty neat seeing my Chaco Golden Knee changing, especially that he is now getting those golden stripes on his legs that the species is known for....yeah I'm tarantula hooked!
