How I got the smooth effect was doing some really light shape guidelines and then once I found the curves and lines that I liked I progressively make them darker and darker while erasing the rough concept lines from around it as I go. Just make sure not to go dark until you are sure that that is where you want the final line to be, until then just keep the lines light. (this may not apply in some circumstances but it is how I did this one) The drawing materials I used for this one was a good ol "Bic 0.7 HB#2 Mechanical pencil" you can get about ten of them for three bucks :3 I occasionally use artist pencils but for the main part I use mechanical like in this one!
And Yes I have tried many times and failed many times not on this piece in particular but on many ones before it (you should see the ongoing mountain of scrap pieces I have saved up) x) You just cant let it get you down otherwise your going to have a hard time. You really just have to keep a positive view on your work and (as cliche as it sounds) keep moving forward!
