Description
Long overdue (seriously, yikes!) Aequis custom for GrumpyHyena ! I was given artistic license for the color and patterning, so I of course defaulted to one of my favorite color palettes: cool and warm greys/charcoal, and fiery oranges and yellows with a nice splash of white. Lots of inspiration from American Redstarts, one of my favorite warblers. I think I may have had a little too much fun designing her, to the point where I wanted to hoard her away.
This lovely lady is a hybrid of temperate islander and tropical arboreal types, so she likely lives in temperate sub-tropical rainforested islands/coasts. She can hold her own out on the waves, but she had better not stay out too long if she wants to keep those lovely plumes in shape!
Winsor & Newton watercolors, Caran d'Ache Supracolor colored pencils (watercolor), with touches of gouache and white gel pen on Fabriano Artistico 140 lb hot press watercolor paper, approx. 11.5 x 15.5 inches (29.21 x 39.37 cm)

So pretty ! I love how curly the feathers of the neck look like, and the color scheme is so striking !
All the pieces of background that you add are also very beautiful. It really gives a nice touch to the illustration.

Finding a way to render those neck hackles was intense: especially given the dark throat feathers underneath to sort of show through. I think I really need to invest in some good masking fluid, to save me a bit of headache!
I feel like those little background tidbits are the only things tethering me to reality right now, yikes! I need to plan out some landscapes for this year, once things are under control again.

They'll be reopening in a month or two! At any rate, I'll be keeping these around for quite some time until people are no longer interested, they're a great pet project for me to work on.

I'm a huge sucker for warm and cool contrasts, with one color being bright and another subdued. Bonus points if I get to use orange or yellow!

Very carefully! Using a good brush is about 75% of that equation, with patience and good reference photos making up the rest. Also, laying off the caffeine to keep most of the jitters at bay!

Never the same twice! Though I wonder if I'll run out of poses? Even for the cheapest designs, my traditional "bases" vary every time I draw them out. Keeping them the same would save me time, but I feel like I need to put some of myself into each and every one, along with specifics from the commissioner, too.
