Description Aspens might be one of my favorite trees...

Tentatively finished commission for elektroyu ! I might still be doing some minor adjustments, so if anything notices anything small and fixable, let me know!

It's a Qualat! pallanoph.deviantart.com/art/Q… They're lovely and quite fun to doodle and paint, as I found out.

Watercolor and gouache (Winsor and Newton) on Arches 140 lb hot press watercolor paper. 9 x 13" (22.86 x 33 cm).

Qualats belong to elektroyu . Art © April Schumacher.

Aspens are wonderful trees! I see you're usin' that gouache. I might be inspired to give it another try

They're so neat, and the more I learn about them, the more amazing they become. I grew up to the sound of a quaking aspen outside my bedroom window, so I suppose nostalgia has a lot to do with my fascination.

I remember someone posting about an acrylic based gouache that doesn't reconstitute! Part of me thinks that's awesome, the other part of me would freak about something that expensive being unsalvageable with water! (I already have such a big issue with acrylics, I need a spray bottle and saran wrap I think. And more film canisters for storage.) I'd love to see if you do some gouache! I get excited seeing others use it, it's so fun!

Thank you! I've got a lot to come to terms with when it comes to watercolor, but since it's always such a joy to work with, I don't mind. Every day is a learning experience!

I'm starting to get into inks, which is more or less, like watercolours, they are becoming a bitter sweet joy to work with indeed. I'm totally inspired by your work as well, so keep it up please!

Remembering your dislike of backgrounds I'd say this is one of the best I've seen from you. Yellow leaves are a wonderful compositional device.

I think it's drawing and composing them that makes me want to tear my hair out! But once I know what I want with color and light, it's great fun! Especially if it's based in nature. I haven't painted urban settings, even though I have sketched them. Someday, I think.

Yellow leaves are good any day of the week. I think they'll be a regular occurrence.

Many crunchy kudos for your manipulation of traditional mediums.  I love the sense of sunlight and dappled shadow in the landscape, and that character's fuzzy face is absolutely wonderful.

Gouache and watercolors are always the best partners, but I feel I have to be careful because I have a tendency to... overwork things. I feel acrylics are much more open to my abuse!

And thank you! I really decided to push the light and color for once, and it was even more fun than I had expected. (It helped I did a digital color study to help me figure it out beforehand, though. )

Thank you so much! The little dappled lights were so tricky, and I see so many artists who make it seem effortless, haha! I might soften the edges a little bit if I feel brave.

This is so beautiful! I love the details on the trees and ferns (I love ferns), and the splotchy lighting on the rocks and the qualat's fur. And the qualat itself just looks so happy to be enjoying a good run.

Super lovely work; I hope you're proud of it!

Ferns are so nice, I'd still like some for my shady yard corners. The splotchy lighting was tedious to work out, but I'm glad it reads well in the end!

Thank you! I am pretty proud of it, actually! I can see I'm finally making some progress and being more conscious of decisions I make during the painting process. I don't seem to have gotten much faster at working, though.

I'm glad I could make it work, after so long! But it sure was fun to work on. I'm going to see if I can make any more tweaks to it, but I hope to get it sent off to you soon!

Oh yes, please! I can't wait to put it in a frame and hang it on my wall! *_* It needs a very special place where I can always see it. Also, I'm happy you had fun painting it!

I can't freaking wait for autumn because of the aspens. I live in Colorado, and while MY house is in the desert-y dregs of nowhere, my best friend's parents live in Eagle County, and that's like, Aspen Central (next to maybe Aspen, which is aspen capitol of the world ) They usually go on a drive to see the autumn colors in the back woods, and as I'm unemployed at the moment, I'm kiiiind of hoping if they go this year I can tag along with them, cause <3 NOTHING like aspen leaves in autumn.

Beautiful with the lighting and colors, and very expressive eyes. Always love to see your work in my watch messages ^^

pallanoph In reply to SargassosArt [2014-08-18 00:51:08 +0000 UTC]

Oooh, I know! We've got plenty of aspens and such around here, but it's best if one takes a day trip north of the city. Between the aspens, paper birches, and the huge variety of maples, I don't know which I like best! I used to live in the middle of corn and soybean fields, so I can relate a bit. I hope you get to go on a trip and see!

And thank you! The colors for this one were a total blast. My favorite color may be blue, but damn if I don't love yellows and oranges.

They are! They're also incredibly fascinating, since stands of aspens are clones, or one big organism sending up individual "trees." I love the sounds their leaves make in the wind!
