Description AL Spradlin Dogtrot at Heritage Park Museum of East Texas in Edgewood, TX

Adolphus Lane Spradlin (1863-1946) arrived in Texas in 1875.  In 1898 he bought land and built this cabin out of hand hewn logs near Edgewood.  He operated a cotton gin and served as JP in Edgewood as well.

Dogtrot cabins (also known as a dogrun, or possum trot) were very common throughout the southern United States in the 19th and early 20th century.  They were built with a breezeway down the middle with the rooms on either side that open into the breezeway in order to allow airflow in the hot southern climate.  This one has a single room on either side of the dogtrot, however, some bigger cabins might have 2 on either side, and even a second floor.

The Heritage park is a full city block in the downtown area of Edgewood, TX with a collection of historic buildings from the area's history.  Some of the buildings had markers and information on them, however, my visit was about 2 years ago and I don't have the history of each structure available to me any more.  I do plan to return in the near future so I can get more pictures and some history of each building on the site.
