Recently I have started thinking about the story that comes after Life Downside Up, a story that is not only about Fae and Evelyn living in the wake of the events that take place in Life Downside Up but also a slightly new angle and perspective, where nothing really changes but at the same time everything changes. I wrote a few test parts last year where Savena arrived into Fae's care having been passed through multiple foster families with the final one dumping her in Fae's care and how eventually Fae comes to take her in as her own and gives her a home. Adoption will serve as one of three main elements of the story where Fae is learning to be like a mother and at the same time Savena is learning to finally trust someone. Along with all the trials and tribulations they will both endure along the way, this will be the main weight of the story and I hope a fitting end to the story.

With adoption being the basic premise of Savena's story that got my mind flowing about the idea of Savena standing on an island in a turbulent ocean with an island of hope and promise in the distance being divided by a beam of light from a setting sun separating the two very different realities.

The basic idea is that Savena's island represents the broken promises and abandoned dreams that she has been given through her life as she has been passed from pillar to post and now stands pensively looking to a future which she wants to trust but is apprehensive to venture towards. Savena's pose is intended to reflect her apprehensions with her feet turned in slightly and a clenched fist as she knows there will be no easy route to salvation.

I made a few iterations of this as I tuned the idea, the original just being two distant trees, but I felt this was far to abstract and wanted to make it a little easier to understand what I was trying to say within the image. I changed the island to also include Fae offering her hand to the apprehensive Savena across the distant water, I tried a few different tweaks with an island of trees blocking the sunlight from reaching Savena before taking those out and adding Savena's own smaller island. Savena's island is made from ash and surrounded by rubbish to represent Savena having been left behind by so many broken promises, whereas Fae's island represents Ljianstipol and the promise of a future where Savena will no longer be left behind.

This is the final version of what I had in min with a distinct bright dividing line of light between the two different islands but you can see the multiple test versions and design stages here on my ArtStation -----> www.artstation.com/artwork/1xG…
