Description Meet Corinne the centauress. Ain't she cute?

I've been working on this picture for what seems like ages now, and today I finished off the last few details, mostly involving the shading on her lower half. I started this picture because I wanted to show a modern-day centaur girl in a dress, all cute and spunky, looking back over her shoulder at the camera, and I wanted it to be a good enough picture that it'd work well on my front page. So here she is.

I have no idea how much time was involved in this (40 hours? 50 hours?), but it's 100% vector-art-with-a-mouse from start to finish: No bitmaps were harmed in the drawing of this picture

This was loosely inspired by Akino Arai's song Follow Me, for those who are curious, and inspired more by the sound and feel of the song than by the words (though the title obviously was involved).

(This is the G-rated Disney-fied version; if you want the anatomically-correct version, there's one posted in my private gallery .)

You can see a closeup of this picture here , which shows all the detail in the print.

High-quality prints of this are available in the store!

I’m bad at keeping up with centaurs so... the only way to keep up with you, is to ride astride you. Hold on.
*places saddle on centauress, and mounts*
Let’s ride, milady.

First, her name is Corinne. Second, why would I do that? She likes what she is, and so do I.

I read some of the comments above... I agree with you. We use to think on centaurs as distant creatures, but they could be like us... An excellent pallette of colors, I must say. Also the pattern of the background.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

phantom-inker In reply to Rufina-Tomoyo [2009-03-03 01:42:55 +0000 UTC]

I don't see why they couldn't be exactly like us, or even made from us. I really like to think of them as just people with a unique shape, and that opinion colors almost everything I draw and write about them.

You did a very excellent job with her.

I think you managed to make a modern centaur fairly well. Is she looking for new converts? (gets in the centaur transformation line)

phantom-inker In reply to DarkwingDork1 [2009-02-26 14:35:35 +0000 UTC]

There aren't a lot of people drawing centaurs in modern society; you either get the ancient-Greek variety, the medieval-magic-sky-worshiper variety, or (rarely) the distant-future variety: There aren't that many people who seem to want to depict them today, just doing normal things and being people, and that's the kind of stuff I like best. This is a very girl-next-door kind of picture β€” with extra legs. The world needs more like it, I think

Oh I agree. That's why I like your character Ally in "The Wotch." She's cute.

I've written a few centaur transformation stories that take place in modern day, so I understand your interest in having centaurs in a modern setting.

I like half-humans to look well-blended. Normally, I try to match the colors and lighting and pose as best I can; but in this case, I went one extra step and took sheets and looped them over pillows in a vaguely centaur-ish shape so that I could see how her dress would hang too. She's a centaur through-and-through, and proud of it!

I have to say, she is darned cute.

The dress colour works perfectly with the fur colour of her horse half. I also love red hair so giving her red hair makes her all the cuter to me. Well, it looks red to me anyway.

Definitely love the expression and question. It could suggest that she wants to play, go on an adventure or perhaps be a little naughty. All depends on the viewers imagination.

I do like the details and posing this one, Inker, but there are two things that are bugging me. Namely that her tail looks truncated a bit and the eyes are way way way too close together. >.<; On the bright side, it look like you spent a lot of time on her (human) back, what with the liberal amounts of folds in her clothes, and aside from the aforementioned eye issue, the proportions are excellent. ^^

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

phantom-inker In reply to AzaleaCloud [2008-11-01 13:02:57 +0000 UTC]

The tail is intentional; it's supposed to look like it's been cut short, just like her hair: The styles are supposed to match.

As for her eyes, some people have suggested they're too close together, but that's really the style here; I wanted to try a different style of anime, so I looked at reference pictures from anime series I haven't watched much of before. I found a girl with very similar facial features and loved how it looked, so I drew a face that matched it. In this series (whose name I forget), the eyes of all the characters were much closer together than in some others, and bigger and rounder, and I figured I'd give the style a try.

In short: She was supposed to look like that.

she's such an adorable centaur^^, the colors are great, also, I noticed her eyes need a li'l more gap from each other, but over-all, WOW^^

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

phantom-inker In reply to nadz07 [2008-10-28 21:29:17 +0000 UTC]

It depends on the shape of the character's face; some need the wider-spaced eyes, and some don't. It all varies depending on the style. When I first drew her, she had slightly different eye shapes; I changed the eyes, because I wanted different ones, but I left the spacing the same. I think the result is still quite good; it gives her a unique, exotic look without making her appear alien.

Glad you like it, though!
