Description A detailed map of Ferelden.

I've drawn information from the following sources (though I might have missed some stuff):
- Dragon Age: Origins
- Dragon Age: Awakening
- Dragon Age: Inquisition
- World of Thedas (Volumes 1 and 2)
- The Stolen Throne (novel)
- The Calling (novel)
- Knight Errant (graphic novel)
- A Bann Too Many; Amber Rage; An Arl's Ransom; Battle's Edge; Where Eagles Lair (pre-set adventures for the DA Tabletop game)

There are a few places where Bioware has released contradictory information. West Hills is given as being both a bannorn north of Lake Calenhad and an arling south of Redcliffe. I got around this by having West Hill be a bannorn to the north, and Western Hills be an arling to the south.

The Hinterlands as seen in Inquisition also doesn't really transfer well onto the larger map. Where possible I've included Inquisition placemarkers, but it's not perfect.

Most of the place names are my own invention, as well as the borders. As a rule I placed the villages at about 10 miles radius from one another (give or take depending on the terrain). This is based on this video from Wendover productions about how settlements built before cars were distributed.

I tried to use a semi-consistent toponymy for the place names (more Scottish towards Highever, more Nordic around the Frostbacks, more Welsh/Cornish around Gwaren, more Irish in the interior).

This was a lot of fun to make. I might try and do the same for Orlais (no promises though; Orlais is bigger than Ferelden).

I'm happy for people to use/expand on this for table-top games, but would like to be informed (if only to feel warm and fuzzy about it )

This is more than I hoped...
Thanks

I've been using your totes awesome wonderful map for a Dragon Age FanFic that involves traveling, distances, and non-canon locations. This is a must-resource for anyone who is a fan of tabletop games (Dragon Age or not, it makes for a wonderful country to play in!) or those, like myself, like to use details and flesh out places to world-build. It certainly saved research time and coming up with a bunch of crappy village names (which I enjoyed your naming scheme; fleshed out and certainly makes sense that regions would have different naming conventions!).

I dimed you out in my story, BTW. Only proper.

First I would like to thank you for this incredible work that you deliver here.

If you still have the files on your computer, would it be possible to get a blank version of the map, without the towns ? I'm currently running a Dragon Age Tabletop campaign which takes place in a Western Hill Arling free of civilized fereldian presence. The players being in charge to occupying and fortifying it. It would be an incredible help if you agreed to publish such file.

Nb : English not being my native language, I'm truly sorry if my request appears rude or ill writen.

I am beyond-words-overjoyed that you're ok with people using this.

I'm writing a DA:I fanfic where it took the Herald three months to appear. Given the growth rate of the Breach, Haven would no longer have been a viable base by then, and I was struggling for where to have the Inquisition seated. And here I went spelunking for another round of research and found this *crying tears of joy into her tea*

The fic is here, and I put a link to your colored version of this map (easier for my eyeballs to pick out small names) in the appropriate chapter (three).

Really, just... really. Thank you. *eyeflash*

Ah! The second I read your description I realized I'd read your story a while back. But it was before I made an account, so didn't have it bookmarked and then forgot about it like a ninny. And you've recently updated, woohoo!

This map is gorgeous! The only things that bother me about it are the bannorn of West Hill and the Alamar archipelago.

As a matter of dejure sovereignty, Ferelden does count the islands as part of the kingdom, as stated by Gaider. I think its just that they don't have much presence on the islands and are mostly pirate nests. As for West Hill, that's confused lots of people over the years.

The bannorn of West Hill is centered on a large fortress of the same name in northern Ferelden that was the site of the battle that saw Arl Rendorn Guerrin, father of Rowan, Eamon, and Teagan, die against the Orlesians. This happened in the Stolen Throne novel. The current Bann, as of Origins, is Bann Franderel, who Slim Couldry has you steal from. I think Gaider or one of the other writers also addressed the confusion around the names at some point. Its on the coast and was built to defend against raiders.

LOVE this, RuBecSo!! I am going to see if I can find Kirkwall or the harbour city that Hawke's family went to with Flemeth's help on the map too but I've got to figure out a way to see the map up close. I realise that, since you do not mention it, you may have chosen not to include those sites or they are beyond the boundaries up there. I am writing a fanfic right now for the D4 Day being celebrated 4th of December. . . so this is why I am looking for Kirkwall.

PS: downloading the map....but it does not seem to work. Have you removed it?

The harbor they went to (talked about in DA2's intro) is Gwaren - Bethany mentions it first, and then Varric confirms that Flemeth took them to Gwaren and they took ship from there.

Thank you!

Kirkwall isn't included on this map; there are a few Free Marches towns, but Kirkwall is beyond the boundary.

I don't think they ever specify which town the Hawkes sailed from. I kind of head-canon it as Portsmouth, but Portsmouth actual location is never mentioned in-game so that's purely based off my placing of it.

Good luck with your writing

This is by far the best map of Ferelden that is out there, but you are missing some places and others are not properly named/placed.

Cathal's Crossing (see wiki for Maric), Bannorn of Langwynne (see wiki for Wynne), Bannorn of Dragonmount (see Ferelden wiki), village of Southmere (located in the Hinterlands), village of Dale's End (see Aveline short story), village of Greenfell (located in the Arling of Amaranthine near the Wending Wood), town/village of Avinash (see The Summer Sword codex), Fisher's End (village north of Hargrave Keep), village of Killarney (see Velana wiki), the Bannorn of Oswin should be located in the western part of The Bannorn inland from the eastern shore of Lake Calenhad (approx. where you have the Wolfbridge Bannorn)

Yes, I will!! Right now it is on the rdaf.co.uk Real Dragon Age Fans website... but the Main Admin has told me I can post it elsewhere. Oh nevermind, anyone can see it on rdaf..... Here is the link: rdaf.co.uk/thread/4222/bit-her…

You do not have to be a member to cruise through rdaf.... loads of peeps do...including Bioware staff/writers!

But I do recommend the site for fans of RPGs in general, not just for Dragon Age.

Loads of fanfic, artwork, contests, and kind considerate Admins who keep everybody respectful of one another.

The site is for adults though, I should mention.

It is the site that broke off from the Bioware (BSN) forums when Bioware changed the rules for participating on forums. Major major fans in the group, in other words.

Sorry for all the long blabla!! haha just though you might enjoy the group. I am Ladaienai in the there, if you do join. Add me for a friend <3 and thanks again for this lovely map!

OMFG! I could kiss you right now!!!!
I recently started an online forums based rpg based loosely on Dragon Age and my greatest lament was a decent map for the different places. You are an absolute blessing. Thank you for making my stress so much less.
