Description Brian Joubert is pretty cool; he skates to Daft Punk and doesn't afraid of anything. Well, anything except people thinking he's gay. That seems to ruffle his feathers a little.
Closet case

Painted this yesterday or the day before. Also it's my birthday tomorrow, can you believe it? I can't. I'm ancient.

Aw, cheers man! I often have trouble putting depth into faces when I paint 'em, so I'm happy to hear that this piece is a bit of an exception!

JOUBEY! one of my friends used to have such a massive crush on this guy. joubey was our name for him. but anyone who skates to daft punk is a cool dude in my book.

beautifully done as ever your digital painting style never ceases to amaze me.

JOUBEY. Aw, Joubey. I can't blame her for getting a massive crush on him as he's quite easy on the eyes. Also as creepy as it sounds, I really like how defined and shapely his face is. He was a lot of fun to paint!

D'aww...

really cool portrait. congrats. really like the loose strokes

scales In reply to madzmejia [2010-12-19 00:41:37 +0000 UTC]

Thanks very much! The loose strokes were a product of working on a large-but-zoomed-out canvas, really.

i really like the effect. The lips are very well drawn. I always have a hard time drawing male lips, but you definitely nailed it

scales In reply to madzmejia [2010-12-19 11:48:07 +0000 UTC]

Man-lips are hard, definitely! To be honest I think I spent more time than I should have on his lips as it took me so long to try and get the general shape right. I'm glad the effort shows!

madzmejia In reply to scales [2010-12-19 17:47:01 +0000 UTC]

It really does
Can you tell me how to work on this medium. Is it like photoshop and a tablet? I'd really like to learn! If you are willing to tell me, of course?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

scales In reply to madzmejia [2010-12-19 20:52:56 +0000 UTC]

But of course! Basically yes, it's a tablet and photoshop but you don't need photoshop to do it. All you need is a digital brush that you can adjust the opacity on. This can be done on Oekaki, actually! Basically I set the brush to around 70% opacity and then basically build up layers of defining colours.

A few people have been asking me about how I work so I'll have to try and make a portrait tutorial, I think!

madzmejia In reply to scales [2010-12-20 06:38:57 +0000 UTC]

thanks!
Well I have a Wacom Initious tablet and an old version of Photoshop CS2, i will try to get the newset version as soon as i can.
I've just never really used the tablet in a piece that's worth it. kinda depresses me to know i have one and can't really do amazing work like yours and some others I've seen around.
About how large is the canvas you worked on?
Thank you very much!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

scales In reply to madzmejia [2010-12-20 18:25:33 +0000 UTC]

Oh no, that photoshop is fine! I use Photoshop 7 for Christ's sake! As for the tablet it's not for everyone; a lot of people out there prefer to use a mouse. As for 'amazing' work please don't flatter me so much!

The canvas was pretty big initially, maybe 2000x3000 pixels? Then I resized the image to be more managable.
