Description ORIGINAL TITLE HORGH.

A picture of Hareton Earnshaw, my favourite Wuthering Heights character because he's an awkward, violent young man with a thick Yorkshire accent who can barely spell his own name for most of the book.
...and somehow Bronte describes him as being handsome, intelligent and good natured under the thick layers of grime, ignorance, dirt and insecurity.

YOU WERE AN INTERESTING LADY WITH ODD TASTES, MISS EMILY- I'LL GIVE YOU THAT.

I mostly did this to practise a different kind of lightsource/ pose from my norm.
The reference for the pose came from this really, really old art book I got from my Aunt called 'Drawing people' by Elliott Ivenbaum. I'd say it's twice, maybe 3 times older than me.

Reference - that old book
Hareton- Emily Bronte?

God I'm pathetic.

Cool, I'm happy to hear it! I think he's very popular with a lot of people; he's very relatable.

i love it! hareton is my favourite character too... ive got a bit of a crush on him tbh. he overcomes so much, and out of all the people to grow up in the poisonous confines of the heights, he retains a goodness and a purity that everyone else seems to lack or lose. even the almost heartless heathcliff cant hate him.Β
also yes, bronte makes a point of saying hes hot.Β
and he likes learning. boys with books are sexy. yay for hareton!

I think he is quite adorableΒ Β

Oh, gosh, he was one of my favorite characters too. (Him and Nelly Dean, I think, the latter for being the only sane person in residence.) Especially those moments where he's all like "MISS CATHY MISS CATHY LOOK I KNOW MY ABCS NOW 8D"

Wonderful lighting and coloring, especially on his face. This is great work!

Ah, I agree! Poor Nelly had a lot of crap to put up with/seemed to be the only person with a lick of sense.

Thanks very much for the comment!

Oh my gosh! I just finished reading Wuthering Heights finally! I've attempted it a few times, and couldn't get through the Catherine-Heathcliff melodrama, and I am so glad that I did.

Hareton is by far my favorite! I always pictured him just like this. Very dark and angry and obviously studly hahaha.

I was scrolling through the comments, and was schoked by all the Hareton-love.
In the book, I felt he was underappreciated.

LOVE THIS!
Love him.
You're a star!

I know right? So many people seem to like Hareton, it's great to see! I found him to be a very interesting addition to the book as a means of outlining just how detached from reality and any sort of romantic ideal Heathcliff truly was in comparison. That and I'm a sucker for the underdog getting a happy ending, something which the young Cathy/Hareton relationship provided in spades!

Anyway, thanks so much for the kind comment!

OMG *o*
Hareton is my fav character too haha I'm glad I'm not the only one... but, I always thought he WAS intelligent and the most suitable for Catherine from the start (it was quite obvious he fell for her at first view xD)

Very nice drawing there! those strokes are as great as the look in his eyes... both strong and a bit rough (just as his manners)I believe you depicted him faithfully.

scales In reply to luza-charly [2010-01-15 19:48:28 +0000 UTC]

Ah, well I'm happy that you feel that I've depicted him faithfully! He's interesting as both a character in his own right and as a means of examining Heathcliff's descent in to [further] madness.

Thanks so much!

I'm near finishing the book, and I must say, Hareton turned out to be one of my favorites too.

I did like Heathcliff; of course, before the whole...Linton deal started.

scales In reply to FelldohTheSquirrel [2009-09-08 01:56:43 +0000 UTC]

He's hard not to like as a character; he really develops over the course of the story.

I actually found myself liking him more after he grew more sadistic; Bronte really conveyed that kind of savage, animalistic and joyless type of character perfectly. I can't imagine that that was an easy task.

This is a good one, I like it. Hareton is my favorite as well. Too bad he's pretty much a supporting character, even though it ends in his favor. He couldn't spell his name at all.
