Description I was getting alot of flak for not working on pictures that don't have a more cheerful quality - because this is not my normal subject theme...I found it really hard and had to fight for the inspiration...so I settled on this print.

Nice. Dramatic contrast. I particularly like the highlight marks on the lips. I hadn't noticed your images were 'dark'- but I guess now that you mention it. Do you transfer the image to the wood with carbon paper? Do you draw on the wood with something permanent? Is this birch or something else?

I bought some cutting/carving tools for wood the other day because they were sooo inexpensive. Five different tools for less than four dollars (made in Taiwan) although they appear to be carbon steel. Should I start on pine or what do you recommend?

To be honest - I took printmaking as the last class in school a couple of years ago (I was on the 10 year program) and really enjoyed the experience. The professor recommended birch...so I went with it from there - I guess I should go with other materials just to see what happens. I have read that some woods are better and some are worse - but I like your approach of experimenting with different stuff and I also have an aversion to the expense of art supplies.

On some pictures I transfer the drawing via carbon paper and on others I draw it directly with a white charcoal pencil. I sit in a lot of coffee shops waiting for my kids at various appointments and use that time to draw or jot down ideas for pictures (these normally get transferred via carbon/transfer paper if at all)...work done at home usually gets done directly .

I also use the computer to get ideas flowing and try some techniques out on different images to get the feel I am looking for...sorry if I ramble, just thinking out loud.
