Description I can't believe I'm showing this old drawing!   This is more of a picture to laugh at, really. My drawing skills back then were pathetic. But I still love to see my improvement! Once again, I should give a little credit to myself with my old drawing; I drew it free handed with only one unprofessional pencil & eraser. I didn't even print the reference. I drew it from the computer. (that doesn't help for proportions)
Hope you like this!

Thank you very much!

Drawing realism isn't easy (sometimes I wonder why I chose that style of art...), & it takes a lot of practice, but it's not impossible.

hmmm yeah I understand .... u know if I ever tried drawing realistic stuff.... its not gonna be even close to your 'before' drawing..XD

Hehe, well no one can draw realism for the first time & expect it to be perfect. I was probably drawing consistently for about 1 year when I drew the 'after' drawing. It takes time.

Yeah I noticed ..I love the detailing abd everything. ....it's just sooo perfect ... well im trying to improve only I'm not getting time now cuz of school and exams ...it'll b free after march maybe ill practise more difficult drawings then

Do u use grids???i mean for the proportions???

shaynaJreddick In reply to xXOreoTheCrowXx [2016-01-14 15:27:47 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I guess summer break would be a better time for drawing practice.

Absolutely. I'm ashamed to say my drawings probably wouldn't look near as good if I didn't use a grid. Lol! But I'd recommend someone to use a grid if they have problems with proportions. It's just so helpful!

hi there. I stumbeled over your account and was blewn away by the naturalism in your drawings. I just read about using grids in this very commentsection. Never heard of this method. Could you explain me how you apply this? Can you buy those and lay it over a printing? Or how does it work?

Hi! ^^
Thanks so much! No, I create my grids with my pencil and a ruler. Here's a video I found that shows how to use the grid method: www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rRg2i… I draw my grid on the reference first, then do the same to my blank paper. Hope this answers your question!

Actually, if I can't find anything to do, it can be boring. XD

Same here. I never knew about using grids till a couple years ago. I was like, "Why didn't I know of this method sooner?" Hehe!

Well right now, I haven't been in the mood to draw. I haven't drawn since August. I do have other hobbies I like; photography, yoga, tennis (can't play that in the middle of winter though. Lol!). What kind of hobbies do you have?

I know how you feel. I was hesitant to upload my old drawings to Deviantart...it's very shaming. Haha!

Haha! Wow! Looking at old drawings always gives me mixed feelings. On the other hand I'm happy that I've visibly improved but I'm also really embarrassed of the poor quality of my previous works.

It's clear that you've worked hard on improving your skills. You're an inspiration!

How can you improve that much in only 3 years?!?!?!? This is AWESOME!!! Have you taken drawing classes or something??

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

shaynaJreddick In reply to Ali-chan2 [2015-09-11 13:08:39 +0000 UTC]

Actually, I can't say it was 3 years. After a couple drawings in '12, I quit until last spring. So my improvement didn't take place until last year.
Thank you very much! No classes, just self-taught & some helpful tips from artists on here.

Holy sh** (pardon me for such language, I just can't believe it ^^)

Now that's improvement!  Wow...

First the drawing in itself is just stunning, I thought it was a black and white picture. Just... How is that possible ?
Secondly, seeing your improvement is impressive. I think other deviant has already told you that, but the original drawing is really not bad, There's talent in it. You just had to practice and.... oh well, when we see the result ...
That's inspiring... The ultimate proof of "Practice makes perfect"

Thank you!
It's possible with practice, patience, & good drawing tools. But it's still far from perfect. I still want to get better at portraits.  I also like seeing my improvement. It gives me motivation! ^^

I hope that instead of seeing the what the first image lacks, aspiring artists focus more on what was gained through the years of practice. This is a celebration of devotion to art and the critical analysis of areas in need of improvement. Progress is never crap when compared to its destination. What I see is the beauty of development, dedication and love of art, from one stage to the next. Continue! We all support your continuation of your passion!

Your improvement is unbelievable! And in such a short period too!   Bravo!

Still, your old drawing isn't really crappy per se. It clearly shows that you had talent that needed fine tuning.
