Description (apologies if this comes up on people's watches again - I wanted to add the Critique option!)

Oil on Board
20" by 30"

'Catchin' Up' - a warm summers day, the breeze just coasting by. It's a place that anyone who has ever sails knows well, and possibly visits in their dreams.

This was exhibited at the old Bangor Heritage Centre, North Down Museum, in November 2007.

The original is framed in a matt black mental frame, approx 3" wide and bevelled at the sides.

I kind of feel bad being the only negative comment, but since you said critiques are welcome I'd like to say that the painting could use a bit more variety of color. I only see red and blue and I'm sure there would be more colors involved (did you see it in real life, in a photo, or imagine it? because that could make a difference). I also think maybe the sky could have had some value difference and it's hard to tell the direction of the light from the values on the boats.

The drawing and composition are very nice though, and I like the shading of the boat on the right.

Shedara In reply to ElGatito [2008-03-06 13:03:49 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the honesty!

It was a bit of the latter two - I had photographs (quite a few) for referencing, but the original image was imagined; I was using the reference to get the shapes right, as boats are difficult, by their very nature. As regards the colour, I do see exactly what you're saying; only bear in mind that I wasn't setting out to paint a realistic painting. Yes, everything is fairly realistic, ie, I haven't messed with perspectives too much; but equally, I wasn't going near photorealism, or even the realism of say, a Turner.
Does that make any sense? I do appreciate the critique, but I thought I'd better explain what it was I was going for in the first place!
Cheers again
