Description I went out onto the balcony to throw something into the "Yellow Bag" (for stuff that can be recycled) when I saw that everything was quite well lit. I looked up, and saw the moon. I was mesmerized. The night was crisp and clear, apart from that faint corona of the lit city at the horizon, and the small clouds that seemingly formed out of nowhere, softly drifting by.

As I'm crazy and easy to motivate, I didn't got to bed but got out my tripod and camera and took moon photos. If it's not already awesome that you can get such crisp shots of the moon with a very not-expensive camera, not-highest quality lens and a not-top of the line tripod...

We've been there!

We, that is humans, the only species of this planet that set foot upon another celestial body! I'm amazed in a bad way by all the shit we stir up, but I'm even more amazed in a good way by the technological and scientific feats we've accomplished. Those are even more breathtaking than the moon on a clear night!

And to think, it was stuff like this that got Galileo in trouble.

I know you said you're not using an expensive lens or camera, would you mind letting me know what kind of lens and camera you are using? No matter what I've tried so far I haven't been able to get such a close, crisp, detailed image of the moon. So I'm just curious as to what you're using. Awesome picture, definitely going to favorite this one.

sorry never noticed the camera info on the side, so I don't need to know it now obviously. But the rest of the comment stands.

No worries, and thanks for your kind words!

I used the 55-250mm tele from Canon, since you were asking about the lens. [link]

that's crazy, I'm speaking for my girlfriend and she has a 300mm lens and hasn't been able to reproduce a picture like this with it so that's what struck the curiosity about it all.

Did she make sure to reduce even the slightest amount of camera shake, using timer and mirror lockup etc.?

we've come to the conclusion that the tripod isn't holding the cameras weight well enough causing it to move a bit during the slow shutter

Ah, I see.

I did only extend my tripod's legs as far as necessary, to avoid any potential shake. However, there seems to be no need for a slow shutter if one wants the moon to be exposed properly, with everything else black. I got away with 1/200 of a second, and that's at the lowest ISO and with a 9.0 aperture.

Thank you very much for the information I appreciate it a lot! Will have to fiddle around and see what we can come up with on the next full moon!

Seriously, if it were only possible to superfave something, I'd go right ahead and do it for this. The sharpness here is just utterly mesmerizing, also rather impressive how close the moon seems at 250mm, nearly every detail of the surface can be seen. A true astronomical masterpiece, very well done.

To be quite frank, I was amazed myself that "just" 250mm would be enough to get this close. I did crop out the black parts, so this portion is almost of the original size, not much sharpening done on it. And the moon is quite amazing as such too, at least to me.
