Description I liked my previous deviation, which was my first foray into landscapes using Maya, but I felt it was a bit lacking.

I started with Maya's paint effects to make the twisted tree, but ended up doing quite a bit of tweaking to get it looking just right. I created the small foreground hill and grass with Maya as well and rendered it all with mental ray.

I wanted something vast but detailed for the background, with nice lighting and atmospherics, and so after a bit of searching I ended up buying Vue. I mucked about for a while trying to figure out what I was doing before finally making the background you see here.

I put the two renders together and made some minor tweaks and color corrections with Photoshop.

It is my first digital image that felt "finished" enough for me to put my signature on.

Wow! Amazingly detailed, I love how it is realistic, yet stylised. Very dramatic landscape, the hills and cliff make it look so.
The lighting is neat, too, makes it look somehow humid, like it is a misty morning.
One of the better scenes I've seen, very fine work!

Thank you! Although there are things in it that I would fix, it is still probably my favorite landscape

Thank you - I put a bit of work into it, so I'm glad it's appreciated.

Thanks. Vue is pretty sweet - kind of reminds me of Bryce. I made the landscape itself (the underlying geo) pretty quickly. Mostly just by creating mountains, editing them with the terrain editor to make them unique, and positioning them so they looked nice.

I messed around with the ground texture to get some sand next to the river and then used the EcoSystems module to cover the landscape with trees and smaller plants at the water line.

Most of the texturing, the trees and plants, and even the sky were just slightly modified presets.

nice composition.

Are you using Ozone for the atmopsheres? Looks very much like Vue..

Thank you. I actually AM using Vue, but only for the background.

Good stuff... you seem to be getting better command of your tools all the time. Me, I'll probably just stick to POV-Ray for the known future, although I might poke around with Blender a bit...

Thanks very much. I wish I could render with POV-Ray myself, its lighting solutions (especially in some indoor renders that I've seen) are absolutely AMAZING. But as far as I know it doesn't have a plugin for Maya...

There probably isn't a plugin. But what kind of file formats does Maya support? Most meshes and maybe even NURBS should be convertable. As far as other scene details (lights, cameras, etc) I don't know.

I did find this:

And a post about it to a POV-Ray mail list:

Looks like it hasn't been touched since an initial release, but who knows.

I gave it a whirl but it seems to have some issue with Maya 2008. C'est la vie.

Thanks for the heads up anyway. I'm gonna see if I can't convince the brass at work to maybe look into V-Ray (not that I don't have enough on my hands, what with Maya, mental ray, Vue, etc).

I was afraid something like that might be the case, since it hadn't been worked on for so long. Oh well.

And good luck with the V-Ray thing

What was the final render time for the BG?

Thanks man.

I think the background took about 14 hours all total to render.
