Description

Feelings for Twelfth Night having been recentlyΒ reignited, and seeing how I am still suffering through a decade-long obsession with this play, I needed to get this down on paper after seeing the show again on Broadway... twice.

Excellently done, if God did all.

brownie points to anyone who can interpret this mess of symbolism,

Yesssss! You know, I was just thinking about this picture today, because we're working on Twelfth Night in English class and I love it so much. But to be honest, Olivia and Viola totally should've ended up together. But Shakespeare is always great. This picture makes me really happy. Your art style in general is a huge inspiration!

i read the title and automatically thought twelfth night, but since it's a lesser known shakespear play, i had to click to make sure i was right in your reference. and i was! yay. i love that play. i was introduced to it in middle school and fell in love. saw the helena bonham carter version more times than i can count. this piece is a lovely tribute, and is now nestled in my favorites

I see . . . a mourning veil for Olivia, a wedding ring (obvious), horns for cuckoldry or general being-made-a-fool-of (presumably Malvolio, in that case), and a wreath of laurel or possibly bay leaves (kingship--or a dukedom, in this case). The purple-and-white pansy is associated with humility in literature and here is reminiscent of the Tudor rose, which speaks to reunification of a warring state.Β

I'm not sure about the three arrows, though; it could represent Cupid's golden arrow, or possibly the trios of characters that act throughout the play--like Feste, Sir Andrew and Sir Toby.Β

Whatever it means, though, I love this. "Twelfth Night" is one of my favorite plays ever written, and the multi-layered symbolism here is perfect.

horns for Orsino being turned into a hart, olive branches for olivia, the pansy is of the Viola family, the arrows for sebastian.

Sebastian is probably one of my least favorite characters in that play. The boy has some serious growing up to do...but then, so does Olivia, I guess. Orsino needs to remember that, unlike the other nobles except Toby, he actually is an adult. I love Maria and Feste, they're such feisty-pantses.

I took a Shakespeare at my high school last year, and it was wonderful! We read this, and watched the movie. It's simply fabulous.
Though, you gotta sort of feel bad for Malvolio.
Anyway, this is wonderful! I love the colors, and especially the veil up top! Wonderful!

I had thought, from the title, that this might associated with the Kushiel's Legacy books; a pity that it is not and an even bigger pity that I unaware that Illyria exists outside of that particular setting.

The crown thing can also be interpreted that the feminine is hidden by a veil of grief, only the masculine crown is showing. And as Viola, the main character, is the woman in question, the crown is topmost, even if hidden.
The ring, a notorious symbol for promises and marriage, hangs on the crux, or central point of the olive branches which symbol Olivia. It's big and prominent so it's central, not just a footnote, despite being the lowest symbol.
You know, I really like and hate heraldry. Seriously, a crane with a rock in it's talons. *sigh*
Fabulous work on this.

omg Claire this is my very favourite play ever ever

The crowns for Orsino and Olivia, I presume? With the veil for Olivia, in mourning. Violet=Viola, pierced three times for the love triangle? Or perhaps for the fact that Orsino wants her, Olivia wants her, and Sebastian wants to find her...

Ah my gosh please talk about the rest of it <3 <3 It's absolutely beautiful.

the arrows are for Sebastian, actually! the antlers are for Orsino being turned in to a hart, olive branches for Olivia, and the double bordure is usually used for twins.
