Description These are a collection of stills from a short animated film I recently completed. I worked with a friend of mine who is a music producer and wrote the music for this animation, and then I went away and animated to the music. The basic story is this: The main character (guy with the big mask) has some serious mental problems, and as he's a sorcerer he decides to use his magic to enter his own mind to see if he can sort things out. He walks through the city of his mind and reaches a huge structure which leads him into his inner mind. The creatures that run his inner mind aren't exactly happy with his presence, and the very problems he's come to sort out turn against him. He is flung up into the air, where numerous creatures/demons attack him and eventually kill. A nice happy ending.

As I can't upload the animation on this site, here is a link to it on my MySpace page. If it doesn't work, then on that page just above the animation is a link to YouTube, where it should definitely work. [link]

Great atmosphere and feel. I'm a animator myself so I know how hard it is to create an animation piece. Check out: [link]

It depends what the project is. I'm pretty busy at the moment and animation is very expensive. What type of project is it? What type of animation are you after? What is your budget?

Thank you! Nope, it's all 2D. Practically everything is drawn by hand, then coloured in Photoshop, then whacked into Flash, then into After Effects where I added lighting to the characters, and then finally put into Avid where my friend helped me edit it and add all the sound effects.

They can't necessarily turn against him if they're what's causing his problem to begin with. Unless, you know, he secretly enjoys being insane, which is probably the case in this particular HotTopicHappyBunnyVasquezHertzfeldt bandwagon disasterpiece.

Well it's not that normal to be walking around inside your own mind. That's why the creatures are attacking him, and he has no control over what they do. And what exactly does 'HotTopicHappyBunnyVasquezHertzfeldt' mean?

The first one you pretty much missed entirely, but as for the second -- I assumed the word 'bandwagon' covered that one.

Thank you! I really love that game, it really persuaded me to make a career in Art as getting paid to make a game like that is my idea of a dream job. Might try and resurrect the adventure game genre when I'm older...

jonathanvair In reply to Si2 [2006-10-13 13:07:57 +0000 UTC]

Oh, please do. I only know of the LucasArts games from a friend that was lucky enough to get them in his elementary school years. There's an entire generation of gamers missing out on the adventure genre. We need new Monkey Island games to make kids think again!

I saw videos of an adventure game for the DS, which looked especially cool since it incorporated rotoscoping. I have high hopes.

…But until then, I'll have to get my artsy-fartsy adventuring needs calmed by the Silent Hill series, since that's all I really have.

Si2 In reply to jonathanvair [2006-10-13 13:21:27 +0000 UTC]

They were such amazing games, and Lucas Arts truly was the king of the genre. Did you ever play Sam and Max hit the road? That was a great game and they were going to make a sequel to it but for some reason the project got cancelled quite recently. They had designed all the characters in 3D and there was a trailer for the game, there was even a petition to keep the game going but it sadly failed. I'll have to look out for the adventure game on the DS.

Man, you have to say "thank you" a lot! But you deserve it. So how do you make an animation like that. I'm thinking of going into that direction myself.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Si2 In reply to daandegekste [2006-10-06 10:59:46 +0000 UTC]

Well, basically I taught myslef how to do it when I was doing my Illustration degree. If you really want to get into it I recommend two things: 1) 'Animator's Survival Kit' by Richard Williams. Amazing book that will teach you most of what you need to know. 2) Make a lightbox. Do not go and buy one as they are a total rip off. I was looking around for them and they seem to cost around £100. Me and my Dad made one for £50 as all you need are bits of wood, some halogen lights and a sheet of perspex to go on top. Simple. Anyway, you also probably need an animation program. I use Flash but there are many others out there. I have no idea what they're like as I have only used Flash. And then just start messing about with random ideas.

With this animation practically everything was hand drawn and then whacked into Photoshop to be coloured, then Flash to be animated, then After Effects to be lit and effects added, then Avid to be edited and sound effects added. It was a hell of a lot of work and if I do another one soon I would really want to work with someone else on the animation. I hope this helps in some way.

I knew it could work that way! But I bet you need alot of time and patience to do all that work.
