Artemis Agrotera, or "Artemis of The Wild Land", was the Greek Goddess of The Moon, The Hunt, protector of womanhood, symbol of chastity, and guardian of childbirth. As the daughter of Zeus and Leto, she was so capable and independent upon birth she even helped in the birth of her twin brother, Apollo of The Sun. Afterward, she came to ask her father Zeus for her own freedom from marriage and bade him give her a land of her own over which to rule. Her land, bow, hunting dogs, animal game, servants, and all else in her estate were obtained from various god through the art of asking. It was for this reason Artemis became known as a self-made Goddess and was for a time with this print a symbol of my initial journey into the uncertain world of freelance illustration.

For her birthday she asked her father, Zeus, for chastity, and for 80 nymphs to be her companions. They were all female & they loved to hunt in the forrest and protect the weak and vulnerable creatures in the forrest. She only loved one man, Orion, and jealous Apollo tricked her into killing him with an arrow while he was swimming on the horizon. She turned him into stars and shot them into the sky with her bow.

Thank you very much. I wanted to convey her association with the moon, so although the bow is incorrect and not strung on the center, I still really wanted a large crescent. Glad you enjoy it!

i really love this!! i always pictured her as right handed, because of her sacred moon phase, and how she holds the bow, just like me

I love how this piece of artwork came out and agree with a lot of the other comments before me, about the bow looking like the moon, and the beauty of the hunting dogs, and the glow around Artemis. Amazing.

I'm working on a series of Greek myth inspired comics and maybe a small artbook of mythology illustrations. The first of which is a short comic about Narcissus (the man who falls in love with himself and comes to an untimely end). Then I'll be jumping into a short series about Eros & Psyche.

Thanks! Definitely intentional. I had to make the bow technically incorrect and strung off-center to pull it off, but I thought the symbolism was more important than the technical aspects. Glad you like.
