Description The L.A. Express was a 70s formed jazz pop group consisting of some of the best L.A. session players of the time period who recorded their own albums and backed up other musicians. The line up stayed the same for the most part, however it did vary at points. In 1973 (when they formed specifically to back up saxophonist, Tom Scott) they were known as The Tom Scott Quartet and consisted of Tom Scott (woodwind), Chuck Domanico (bass), Mike Wofford (keyboards), and John Guerin (drums). But by '74 after Wofford and Domanico left and their name changed to Tom Scott & The L.A. Express. New members Max Bennett (bass), Larry Carlton (guitar), and Joe Sample (keyboards) joined for the "newly" formed group. With this line up they recorded a self-titled album and played on the majority of Joni Mitchell's legendary Court And Spark album.  It was also during this time they composed and performed the soundtrack to the X-rated animated movie, The Nine Lives of Fritz The Cat. Somewhere in mid '74 the line up changed after Carlton and Sample left, entering new guitarist, Robben Ford, and new keyboardist, Larry Nash. With this new line up they backed Joni Mitchell (Miles of Aisles) and George Harrison (Dark Horse) on tour and in the studio. By late '75 Scott and Nash left to pursue solo careers and were replaced by saxophonist, David Luell, and keyboardist and percussionist, Victor Feldman. Without Scott they recorded two albums and by the second one (last album) Ford left and was replaced by guitarist, Peter Maunu. The line up I rendered in my piece features from left to right, Tom Scott, Max Bennett, Robben Ford, Larry Nash, & John Guerin.

As a side note John Guerin also had a relationship with Joni Mitchell and help produced some of her later albums. Guerin passed away in 2004. Tom Scott aside from working with George Harrison also managed to work with Paul McCartney, & Ringo Starr on solo projects as well.

Good eye!  That's cool.   George had heard their work with Joni Mitchell and invited them "up to the house" to cut a few tracks for "Dark Horse".  L.A. Express worked with George on the tour that followed, and even got their own showcase song: Hari's On Tour Express.

Hari's On Tour is my favorite song off of Dark Horse. Robben Ford and Tom Scott were on the tour.
