When I saw the moon actually crushing clock town, I thought of hiding in the ranch, hoping it was far enough from the impact site. But obviously the moon crashed and I was game over. D'OH.

Not exactly. You can continue moving around and completing your quests just like in a normal day.

Go to the observatory on the last day and look in the telescope for the final minutes of the day. On the last 1/100th of the last second before the end of the world scene, press B to exit the telescope view. This can be really tricky...
If done correctly, the old guy will talk to you, which will prevent the cutscene from playing after the time has elapsed. And you will be able to keep going for a 4th day or more. 8D

No I mean whats the down side to it.

Well, 75% of the NPCs have vanished, and the game will freeze if you talk to certain of the remaining ones, like the bomber kids. Other than that, everything seems pretty normal (other than some harmless visual changes such as a pink/pruple sky, open clock tower, and a very tiny moon way up in the sky that does not fall down.)
