Description To outsiders, it may seem odd that this diminutive, oddly-shaped being could lead the entire cadre of virtues, but Hope is the rock that ties the virtues together, a small, quiet beacon when the darkness seems otherwise overwhelming. Lacking the furious will or the overwhelming strength of her counterpart, Hope is rarely ween without Justice, her second-in-command, at her side. But for all her seeming weaknesses, Hope remains unshakable in her belief of the goodness of the universe and the eventual success of their mission, something the other Virtues can latch onto when they suffer losses and setbacks, looking to Hope as a sort of barometer of their own optimism; so long as she remains steadfast, the other virtues feel they can persevere as well.

---
So here we have an anchor being a symbolism for hope up in her halo there. Gemstones referring to hope being firm and steadfast as a rock, and the more literal reference of a Hope Diamond- those being her eyes. Her outfit is derived from a wedding dress, as it takes no small degree of hope and faith to make it "till death do us part". We have a cactus- one of the few sources of hope in the desert, and lastly a flying fish. For a creature who cannot even breathe air, flying, well, there's certainly hope in that.

Hey you know the Nazis and Hitler had Hope, as do the Taliban and the KKK. After all if they didn't have Hope, they wouldn't have committed their crimes. Think about it.

This is true, hope can be very dangerous and destructive when it is used by evil men. False as well can be very destructive and has caused a lot of pain over the years.

After reading all the chapters thuse far, I've noticed you have not made any mention of the realm of Purgatory. Since you most likely are not going to do an embody ment of Purgatory would you mind if I make a gale to represent Purgatory?

I'd rather not, if it's all the same to you. Purgatory is a kind of middle ground, and given as I've personified heaven and hell, I don't want to add a third faction into the mix.

I like the use of the cactus especially. It represents hope in 2 ways, the plant itself is has hope, as you've mentioned to several people here, but it's also a symbol of hope to other animals in the desert. It is one of the few reliable sources of water in a harsh, unforgiving environment.

Hm. In Justice's description you said that she was the opposition to Pride. Now I see you've done a 180. What happened there?

Justice is the opposition to Pride as far as their characters are concerned, she's just not the leader of the virtues.

i gotta admire how you guys can think of these symbols and then slam them all into one person and make it look kinda possible, Some brilliant work in the design and colouring as well.

First time I've ever heard of a cactus used as a symbol of hope, but it works. I like how intricate her halo is.

Well, really, when you think about a plant that lives for months and months in schorching heat without collecting a drop of water, you better believe that it's got hope, because out in the desert it's got basically nothing else.

I like it, bible-thumping comments aside. Your interpretation of the concept is well-thought out and intriguing. Keep up the great work.

Her eyes are diamonds. If I could italicize that, I would. And her legs are cacti.

Of course, unsettling WORKS for her. She's (apparently) the head of the Virtues, she doesn't HAVE to not cause nightmares.

TheSoylentOrange In reply to Private-Zack [2010-09-25 17:56:29 +0000 UTC]

Hope is often described as a rock that people cling to when they have nothing else, so I figured what better representation of a rock than one that's molecularly perfect?

That, and I couldn't *not* trow in a reference to the Hope Diamond.

Private-Zack In reply to TheSoylentOrange [2010-09-25 19:17:11 +0000 UTC]

I really can't argue with symbolism.

It's just diamond-eyes are creepy. Imagine Hope staring at you.

For hours.
