Description I find George Boleyn to be an intriguing guy, mainly because there is so little info out there about him. Also, he has something of a dark and sordid reputation, what with him being executed because of (flimsy) charges of incest with his sister Anne Boleyn, and he having a reputation for being a libertine (who lived in a "bestial" fashion). And then there's the matter of his wife, Jane Parker, Lady Rochford. Misunderstood wife or cold-blooded bitch? I incline towards the latter view of her, but she was probably quite interesting and complex (most novels portray her as a cartoonish schemer/nagging wife).

I'm going to scrap this soon, but I was wondering if any of you all had any ideas for a composition depicting these two. I was trying to sketch out some ideas, but I think I'm having a bit of artists' block... any ideas, anyone?

That is very well written and thoughtful. I actually wrote this long thing about my theories about George and Jane Boleyn, and why they acted the way they did. After I finished it, I just felt so sad for both of them. I don't think I could ever turn it into a story, because it's the most unbelievably depressing thing ever.

Intertwining arms... could you possibly do that picture yourself? It would be so beautiful!

Don't worry, I haven't forgotten about the gift art I owe you! Everything's been Georgian for me lately, and I needed to take a break from it.

I was actually hoping you'd ask me what horribly depressing story I'd thought up for G. and J...

I was curious! LOL but I also know that there are some things you keep hush hush.

So, pray tell, if you wish!

Horribly depressing I have to take in small doses, otherwise I'm devastated for days, depending on the amount of time I spent reading.

I just sent you a note. It's just an idea... I doubt it will ever be turned into an actual story because it's so damn depressing. But it'll help inform this painting I'm working on, at least.

I think Jane's problem was a mixture of jealousy towards Anne (who i've viewed as completely innocent, although maybe a little flirtatious) and neglect on George's part ( i don't doubt that he was off gallivanting with other women (at least )-what nobleman didn't, at least secretly?). There is a book on Jane ("Julia Fox's "Jane Boleyn: The Infamous Lady Rochford").

I haven't read the Julia Fox book yet, but I read a very interesting review of it by one of my favorite authors, Hilary Mantel. [link]

I don't really think of Anne as being particularly innocent. She was an ambitious woman who got in over her head... and then lost it... bringing down a bunch of people with her. It was a tough era, unfortunately.

Weir and Fraser do some of the best historical books, but neither seems to have written more than snippets on Jane Boleyn. Mantel's does sound good though Will have to see if my library bothers to buy it when they re-open.

Well, at least Anne didn't seem to whore herself out like her sister Talk about hypocritical Henry.

Mantel didn't write a book about Jane Boleyn- she just reviewed Julia Fox's book. I love Mantel's reviews though. Sometimes they're better written than the book she's reviewing...

I love George Boleyn and even if he wife was a little witch, I love the story behind them. (I actually just did a portrait of George and will probably do one of Jane in the future.

Great sketch, you should definitely continue with this.

Thank you! He is certainly a very intriguing guy. I look forward to your picture of Jane!

Speaking of which, what do you think of Julia Fox's biography? I haven't had a chance to read it yet, but I would love to, the next time I have the chance.

Thanks for the suggestion! I so love the costumes in TOBG- the men's clothes were especially nice. I loved all those fur trimmed coats and square-necked doublets. It totally pwned the costumes in "The Tudors."

really?! GUHH! I still have yet to see it! Apparently they've been giving it on TV already but I either find out when its over, ending, or already in the middle! I'll keep a lookout on the costumes when I watch it now!

You can see plenty of pics here: [link]

A lot of the fabrics and patters were simplified and modernized, but I was particularly impressed with the various hats/hoods, and also in how they resisted the call of plunging necklines (unlike other shows like "The Tudors").

I think you should draw something with a bit of sexuality. Like Jane getting kinda slutty on George, but George just looks really serious. Something dark and intense but kinda pokes fun at Jane a little bit.

I find him very intriguing too. Literary treatment tends to depict him as rather dashing - given his reputed libertine ways, do we suppose there is much weight in this?

Very lovely sketch. Perhaps a simple composition but with ripe atmospheric tension is not too bad an idea?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

suburbanbeatnik In reply to Himmapaan [2009-01-28 13:30:06 +0000 UTC]

Dashing- that's perfect! I like to think of him as very dashing. I always have a soft spot for doomed pretty boys. I like both him and Anthony Woodville (Queen Elizabeth Woodville's brother) since they're in the same category- the doomed hot playboy brothers of annoyingly ambitious and unlucky queens. Wow, I think that's going to be a comparative biography in Flora Fraser's future!

Simple, but atmospheric... Now you've got me thinking...

Hey, what books have you read that has George as a character?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Himmapaan In reply to suburbanbeatnik [2009-01-30 04:15:05 +0000 UTC]

Actually, come to think of it, I think I only read one in which he features at any great length: The Other Boleyn Girl (looong before the film, which I still haven't seen).
