Description To be scrapped soon. Part of an extremely short comic-thing I did a while back, involving Maximilien Robespierre and Louis de Saint-Just. If you know who they are without my explanation, you get a thousand cool points.

So, Robespierre is the legendary dictator of the French Revolution, the one generally held responsible for the Reign of Terror. Of course, I think he gets a far worse reputation than he deserves, since there were many other individuals equally responsible for the Terror. Anyway. I absolutely love him. Don't approve of his Marxism or the whole genocide thing, but he makes for an incredible character and his story is fascinating. Love.

Saint-Just is one of his followers, a much younger and in some ways more extreme revolutionary. He idolizes Robespierre. And he's also extremely hot. Just so y'know.

Clothing loosely based on their actual clothes, although for Saint-Just, I just sort of did what I imagined Enjolras wearing from Les Miserables. But since Enjy is based on Saint-Just, I figure it's okay.

Haha. In my mind, only Saint-Just could get away with calling him Max.

Hideous coloring and lines, but I just wanted to sort of give it a semblance of niceness.

I'll put the rest of the comic in scraps in a minute...

They are so adorable ^^ I like Maxime's pose! So nice to see them both again. And so nice to meet French Revolution fan (sadly we are endangered species on DA )

It was always fascinating me why FR fans are so damnly often Les Mis fans as well (we haven't got it as obligatory book in school but I have read it some time ago out of curiosity, paradoxically in English [I wanted to enhance my vocabulary, cause it isn't my national language] and I must confess I'm kinda fell for it)
I know both FR and Les Mis were about revolution - in different times, but still. And I was asking myself: is it the only reason why they fasinating people equally?
And now you enligthened me that Enjolras was based on Saint-Just. I feel as ignoramus - I didn't know this... Thank you

I'm pretty sure that's true about Enjolras. Certainly, he played the same role that Saint-Just did in the original Revolution.

I haven't actually read Les Mis! *GASP* I'm a huge fan of the musical, and I have no doubt that I will read the book as soon as possible. It's just very long, so I'll need to clear my schedule to dive into it.

I know I originally thought that Les Mis was about the French Revolution, until I finally realized that there were actually multiple revolutions. I just find that whole era of French history totally fascinating. I read about it all the time.

Thanks so much!

I haven't seen the musical, but I guess it's worth seeing

Yes, French history (as the whole history for me) is totally engrossing. But I can't help reading more and more books about FR, especially revolutionists' biographies. Their lives in some way inspire me, altough they made so many terrible decissions. Though we still can blame the crisis and other circumstances for such damages: the system was still flawed and wanting, the war and antirevolution were destroying the country, as well as destitution. Committees were trying to heal the country but they lost themselves in the vicious circle of the terror - you know what I mean

But reffering to the musical: How could I find it?
Well, motion pictures have always greater influence on society then books. As for FR - so many fans begun from anime series (Rose... , Lady Oscar etc.) or La Revolution Francaise (film). I think it is very good impact of movies and television

Oh yes. I think it is perfectly acceptable to be fascinated by a historical figure and not agree with everything they did. It's still incredible to see how they thought and what their ideals were. I think Robespierre certainly had what he considered good intentions, but... obviously it didn't pan out so well.

I haven't seen the musical live yet, but I adore listening to the soundtrack. I'm sure you could find a recording somewhere. I think the musical is mainly playing in London now... I know it went off Broadway a while ago before I got into it. I'll definitely try to see it at some point, though.

I really need to watch both those movies (Rose, LRF)! I've heard a lot about them, so I just need to find them somewhere!

On youtube there is whole film La Revolution Francaise In French and English language version. English is harder to find, so here you are first part: [link]
The beginnig is cute: young Maxime and Camille Desmoulins

Indeed Maxime had good intention, but for me, he's surely gone mad. I've read his pre-revolution works and they were rather reasonable. He bacame famous for treatises against capital punishment (sic!). Then I took his last will (from 1794) to compare and I was shocked. It was the text of man who has gone insane... Malaria was very damaging to his body, but even though I was concerned.

Oh, thanks so much for the link! I'll definitely watch it once my semester ends. (Three more weeks. XD) Yayyyy.

So how could Robespierre be a Marxist before Marx was even born?

sunni-sideup In reply to TRF-Chan [2010-02-13 20:48:09 +0000 UTC]

Robespierre was Marxist before Marx knew he was Marxist. They had very similar ideas, but Marx took them a bit further.

Can I have 500? (Knew Robespierre, not Saint-Just)

I don't remember much though. Did Robespierre break his own jaw just before he was executed, or did someone else break it for him?

No one's positive about what happened to Robespierre, although most people agree that he attempted to commit suicide. The other revolutionaries he was with had brought pistols for that very purpose, but Robespierre had never used a gun in his life, so it's logical that he botched it. It's still possible that the incoming soldiers shot him before arresting him, though. XD

500 cool points!

Yay! I'm half cool

I love that picture by the way.

French Revolution is the AcDec theme this year!

If you're not as nerdy as me, AcDec stands for Academic Decathalon, and I've always thought it was really boring. But this year is not gonna be that way.

oooooh I love the drawing ! and as a French, I'm very pleased to see someone who's interested in the Revolution outside my dear country LOL.
That's my favorite part of our history, it's sooo interesting and nowadays society is directly the consequence of that event ^^

St Just is cool, I remember that he wrote really funny stuffs against the monarchy. Satiric poems LMAO they're very funny to read (quite scatological though...)

yeah I think that the title is Organt (written between 87 and 89, I guess)

French Revolution is obsessing xD don't worry, I'm like you. Grenoble, the city where I live, is one of the most important city in the Revolution (and one of the first which rebelled against the monarchy openly). So we can visit a lot historic sites with our schools here that's how I became fascinated by that period

OMG, I've never seen it, but I just punched it into Wikipedia and it looks utterly amazing!!! I absolutely adore Marie Antoinette. I've also heard of Le Chavelier D'Eon, another FR anime. I'd like to check out both of them.

Chevalier d'Eon takes place a little before, it's during Louis XV reign but Versailles no Bara is right before the revolution, it's very cool

I had to do a big project in English on the Terror! Well, we had to pick our own topics, and I'm all, "I love the French Revolution, but they don't tell us anything about the Terror in class. I should learn more about that." And whaddya know, I fell madly in love with the bad guy. *facepalm* So glad to hear someone else appreciates my fangirliness over actual historical dead people.

WhitewolfSpirit In reply to sunni-sideup [2009-06-02 00:21:29 +0000 UTC]

That's pretty dang awesome. We were restricted by just choosing a social injustice so most people did World War II. D: As far as I know I was the only one who chose the Terror! I was so happy I was original! Don't feel bad about falling for bad guys. I'm completley obsessed with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. And which one do I favor? That's right, Mr. Hyde, the sadistic, evil guy who kills people with a cane! xD

I honestly cared nothing for the french revolution. When I first learned it I went up to my teacher and asked "WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?! We're not in France, lady!" That earned me a D-note. I did enjoy the execution of Louis the 14th (I cannot do roman numerals; THIS ISN'T ROME!) and generally every part including the guillotine. I WANT TO GET ONE ON EBAY.

It's very nice actually. Interesting, since I just read this book about the French Revolution. There was this one figure that caught my attention. Charlotte Corday, who assassinated Jean-Paul Marat while he was in the bath. Talk about embarassing ways to die.
