1st Place!! Wahoo! [link] AND Viewer's Choice awardThick silence filled the night air, the fog, a crawling being over the show grounds. Gradually, a soft breath could be heard; inhaling and exhaling accompanied by the solid march of hooves. Along a candle-lit path Braydan moved through the shadows, his muscles illuminated, dancing with the flicker of the flames.
I loved every minute of working on this-for once. Maybe it was because I was watching the seasons of Gargoyles while working on it.
Also, I would listen to the audio book of A Dance With Dragons. So, a lot of dark eerie inspiration went into this, and I liked it. Braydan seems to bring these kinds of atmospheres on himself. Event: Flying Feathers Light Show

I really love the warm lighting and the subdued tone in this one.
If I run on the assumption that the only light sources are the candle lamps you have to consider two things: One is that the light is coming entirely from underneath and the second is that flames have a very short range. Their light doesn't go very far and as such they tend to cast really harsh shadows because there is very little reflected light. Thus, the lightness on his back, unless he is essentially quite there, would not be without an additional overhead light source. Also consider the shape of the neck. The middle of the neck is thicker than either the top of the bottom due to how the horse's skeletal and musculature work, thus the top portion of the neck (essentially the crest and the muscles just below it), would be in shadow and wouldn't be receiving any light. Same goes for the top of his forearm and shoulder. You would also have more light on the underside of the belly and especially his legs, considering they are the closest part of his body to the lightsource.
You're getting there though, and each piece is better than the next. I do realize that much of the comments are entirely nit-picky, but it's only because I believe that is the level you're at and I don't think you're getting this push from elsewhere. You have a great talent and have cultivated it well. I thoroughly enjoy watching your work and seeing your continued push forward.

In my defense, and considering your critique for the next one (will do better on); I looked up stock photo's of candle lite subjects and they were pretty well lit. And, being an avid multi candle decorator (total of 15 in my living room this Christmas), I think they can give off a lot of light. My thought line for this piece was that there were hundred of the candles-in-a-bag snaking in a path all through the grounds. Plus an additive of fog holding some of the light that might make the light spread more. But you are right, I got lost in some of the shading in the neck and I see where it should be way darker than it was. You should have seen it before I added a darkening filter on top. So much brighter than what it is now. I added that filter just in experimentation and it really darkened it down and instantly look better, apart of the picture on accident! That was nice. So really, the shadows need to be darker in all, and legs lighter.
I do like how it came out though because it still is cartoonish and matches the mood and a bit of the Gargoyles style that I was watching will doing it. But all things considered, I wouldn't be working like this without your comments!!

I wonder with the reference images, though how far the subject was away from the light source? Also consider that inside you have a lot more reflected light, which amplifies it as less of the light is lost. The fog would help to hold the light.

far from perfect, but thank you for the complement. The horse is done in grayscale, with regular painting on top, everything else is painted.
