Description ~MAxKhaos and I have been working on a structure for our Hyksi herd We decided that our dal characters, Tussock and Goldenlarch, both came from the Marshland Herd and were captured by Loosestrife during a raid. Right now we're working on designing the three brother-bucks that command the herd. This is the middle brother and Goldie's father, Papyrus.

Papyrus - as his name would suggest - is quiet and studious, preferring to lie and ruminate rather than participating in the seasonal Clash, or even mating with the dals (he does of course do these things, but more out of a sense of duty than anything else, and the latter not particularly often). He has a keen interest in Hyksi lore and ritual spellcasting, and as a result is well-versed in such things.
There was only one dal that had ever held any interest for him - the bewitching but flighty Fennel (more on her in future). It was she that bore the kyfaw Goldenlarch, who subsequently developed an unusual close relationship with her sire.

Papyrus was designed in history class today, and so far I really like him (yes, the marking on his back and rump was supposed to resemble the papyrus sedge itself xD). Just getting his colours down here, and in a position where we can see all his markings. I'll turn this into a proper ref eventually. (And I dislike the way I draw antlers digitally o.- I need to scan the doodles of him I did, I draw antlers so much better on paper.) ohwell. This was fun

..more on the herd coming soon - I hope!

I really like this hyksi breed. Predatory deer and horses have always fascinated me XD The markings on this guy are simple, but gorgeous <3 especially up by the shoulder.

I'm glad you do, because they are the awesome. *OpalSkye created them and their rivals the Fearaki, and ~Ryvarda is the account where all the info and stuff is going to be. You should check it out, might even get you making one -shameless pluggage- xD

Anyhoo. I'm glad that you like my Papyrus, thank you very much!

X3 Yeah...you probably will get me making one....seeing as I was staring at them going "oooh! I want one in____!" Yeah... Does Opalskye like other people to make them, then? (If credited, of course.) That's awesome!

Oh, from what I know she loves that people take an interest in her creations! She might be a while in getting back to you, since she's been busy lately with things, but the ~Ryvarda account journal has lots of helpful links with info on both the Hyksis and the Fearaki species definitely recommend you check all of that out if you're considering making one!

Wow, this is just amazing. These creatures are beautiful. I so wish they were real, then this world would be perfect. And the way you draw them make them so full of life, all of them so unique.

I was reading up on the history and information on them, and I was so tempted to make one. But then I pulled myself away because I'm afraid that I'll get the looks wrong, or the history, or the herd or something. Actually, now that I think of it... what probably really pulled me in was their personalities. They're not all alike, and not all "extremely nice, becomes friends with everyone" little fellows. Am I right? Unless I read wrong. Eh, but seriously. You pull of these guys like white on rice. (I just heard that saying today. Thought I might add it in. Probably makes no sense in that part, huh? lol)

Wonderful job!
-drools over them all-

Aw heyy, there's no need to feel intimidated by all that stuff! From what I know of Mytola, she'd be thrilled to hear about another Hyksi or Fearaki being created and she'd be all too happy to help you out with getting the details straight ^^ I've helped someone with a Hyksi character already and it is fun, so I'd be willing to help you out too if you needed it

Yeah, they have such a great design (rabbit-deer-weasels, who'da thought?! ) and it's really conducive to my style. I've been drawing them quite a bit And I absolutely LOVE creating characters with depth to their personalities and expressing them in my art, so I'm glad you think I've pulled them off Thank you! (and don't be shy! CREATE A HYKSI! >D )

You would really be willing to help out little ol' me? That would be more than lovely, if you wouldn't mind. Of course, I don't want to be a bother.
I'm glad to hear that you think the creator would be happy to see another created, because if you haven't noticed, I'm pretty shy. xD; But yeah... I think I would need someone to guide me in the right direction, to tell me what I'm doing right and wrong. I would hate to be the one known as "the girl who killed the Hyksi." lol.

You should be proud! Your ability to create those characters AND give them unique personalities is amost Godly.
Alrighty then, you have inspired me to work on the anatomy of the species. Thank you.

Oh, totally, I love character development so it's just fun for me to talk about character personality and backstories with people ^^ especially when I'm as inspired by the universe as I am by this one

Don't be so hard on yourself! I doubt you'd ever 'kill' the Hyksis, they're made of stronger stuff than that Believe me, I'm positive the creator would love you for creating another Hyksi I can't say I know EVERYTHINGzOMG about the Hyksis, since I didn't create them after all, but I'd be happy to help direct your questions to Mytola if you didn't feel up to it xD

And THANK YOU so much for all the lovely compliments! I'd love to see what you come up with!

Squee! I always love the studious types. I need to create a Fearaki of the same vein!

I love how he looks old and grumpy, it makes me laugh. We history/literature/lore buffs always look grumpy after spending so much time reading. I don't know why, though, acuz I'm always at some of my happiest when reading about mythology. Maybe we're grumpy acuz the world's nothing like books, most of the time.

Awesome job! (Look how fuzzy! *plays with his 'mane' of sorts*)

swift-whippet In reply to causticardor [2006-10-13 16:44:14 +0000 UTC]

LOL! You might consider making a Sahkrite character then - they're the wise men/women types for the Fearaki packs. I'd wait until Mytola/Opalskye uploads more info on them, she did say she was going to do that at some point ^^

Ahhh I need to get back into reading regularly again. My vocabulary has been steadily diminishing >>; and I LOVE lore/mythology, too

Heehee, Mytola herself calls the fluffy neckfur the Hyksi buck mane, so you're right in calling it that ^^

Awesome! And more backstory, I'm all asquee!

I love the white splotches on the hind feet.

And I noticed that his middle claws were much larger -- is this a Marshland herd thing? Or just a Papyrus thing?

Is there a map with a definition of the location of various herds? Or notsomuch?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

swift-whippet In reply to WhiskerWing [2006-10-13 12:51:01 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Whisker, I'm glad you like The backstory is always fun to plan out for me, and this one came very naturally There'll be pictures up of Fennel in future, I'm sure!

Kas and I thought that they'd probably have developed adaptations to living in the marshes, and big flat feet would probably prevent them from sinking I know not all of his feet looks the same size, but yeah. They're all supposed to look like his left hind.

I don't think there is a proper map as yet, but I assume that's something that can be worked out when the time comes ^^

*nodnod* I've been thinking about Dandelion and Meadowsweet, and if the ages are as you said (where Alder would be young, around his 20's) then I'll need to modify the part of their story that happens after they get kicked out/left behind Strife's herd.

I still want them to meet up with Alder and merge the stories around his vendetta with Loosestrife, but I also want it to be culturally and logically correct. ^^

The stories make this so much fun -- so much more developed than creating a random character.

-fervent nods- ^^ I love adding depth to characters, it really inspires you to draw them more than all the speshul shiny markings and rainbow colours in the world ever could

*giggles* Ain't that the truth? They've got life, they've got history, they've got meaning.

Sure, having a character with five billion tattoos and excrutiatingly detailed markings may give that meaning to you, but it becomes more difficult to share that meaning with others. This way, you can have people who enjoy the character for the beauty of the design, the eyeball interest of the new species -- and you can have those who dig deeper, who read the character bios and learn about the species habits. Your viewers choose their own level of interest. ^^

Yeah, this breed of unshaded picture does have a certain elegant appeal to it, I often think, makes it look rather like oldschool animation cels (which I think are AWESOME, natch'. Not to mention it works for me when I'm feeling lazy xDD). I do think that they're rather underrated and more people should do them. yep.

Eh, the whole mother-dying-in-winter thing is actually a lot like Alder's backstory. (and I was gonna make Alder's mammy black too, -gasp-) o.O not to say you copied me or anything hon, it's more a case of great-minds-think-alike, but Lonicera just doesn't feel right in Loose's herd. =_o I'm so sorry hon.

..if you want, I could help you develop buck characters and a herd for Loni. (I seem to be doing that a lot as of late anyway; I enjoy discussing characters and Hyksis are awesome, so yah) ^^ Note me or something!
