Amanda walks over to the railing on the balcony of the restaurant. She sighs as her eyes scan the shining expanse of the city. The cool air swirls through her blonde hair.

Damien: So... How'd you meet him?

Amanda turns. Damien is leaning against the threshold of the balcony doorway.

Amanda: (turns back towards the city) A friend set us up, then, she left us alone.

Damien: Hit and run, huh? I hate those.

Amanda: It isn't all bad. He's great conversation... and, he's funny. It's been a pretty good date. You could learn a thing or two from him.

Damien: (smiles) That again?

Amanda: (turns around and leans against the balcony) How about you and your date? You two are old friends?

Damien: Yeah... Rochelle was... pretty popular back in high-school. Let's just say I was more aware of her than she was of me. It was only chance we met again, six months ago. This is the first date we've ever been on.

Amanda: (Laughs sarcastically) Only six months, hun?

Damien: I'm a busy guy.

Amanda: I hope you're actually showing a lady a good time, this time, right?

Damien: As in...?

Amanda: "As in" Keeping work out of it. Not giving a lecture on how important what you do is and why.

Damien: I'm not that bad.

Amanda: (serious) You're kidding right? (laughs, leans forward) Damien, you're obsessed with work! I don't know if you realized it but most of your interactions with others lead to you proving your superiority over whoever you're with by expressing your greater abilities in the field of all sciences in some way! I'm willing to bet you did the same with every 'lucky' lady to be graced by your company.

Damien thinks back to events with Toni:"This is all hypothetical now. Trust me, nothings gonna happen if it isn't proven safe. Currently, we are at a crossroads. There are things that CAN be done now, but the question is... is it morally right?"

"Is it, Damien?"

With Roxanne: "No, no... I like that. I've never... met a scientist before... I mean, like, a real one. All the ones I hear about are those weird guys you see..."

"...Curing diseases and building the foundation that the very world we live in stands on? Very weird."

With Rochelle: "This is a sub-nuclear fusion engine. It emits no residual toxins and needs very little recharging. It powers this fine machine.... So, the whole expensive gas thing...? It really isn't a problem for me."

Amanda notices Damien is deep in thought.

Amanda: I'm right, aren't I? (sighs) Damien, I'm not trying to bust your balls, it's just... (sigh) You can be... kind of a prick sometimes. An interesting, genius, talented, accomplished, prick... and frankly, it's made even worse because... You don't even realize it. Do you?

Damien: (looks up at Amanda and smiles) Maybe so, but, it seems to have served me well so far. Unless I'm mistaken and none of the things you said to me earlier today can be taken as truth.

Amanda: What did I say to you?

Damien: Do I really need to repeat it? Your plea to me for a , what was it- an evening that wasn't "just business?" What was that about?

Amanda's jaw drops.

Damien: Hey. You're the one who said it. I'm just trying to interpret it's meaning.

Amanda: O.k. guy! Let's just tackle this head on right now. TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT ME BUDDY! Do I look like I need to beg a man for anything? I do not have, nor have I ever had trouble getting what I want when I want it, alright?!

Damien: I'm not suggesting anything, Mandy...

Amanda: Don't call me that, dude. Nobody calls me that. I hate that name!

Damien: Fine, Amanda- But, what was all that?

Amanda: (calms down) ...That was... god... That was... (thinks for a moment) ... O.k., that was nothing. What I meant was I wanted something better than a work briefing... on a date of all things. I was hoping I'd get a chance to know you better. I mean, that's what these things are for. ...And whatever else happens... well... happens.

Damien: (thinks back) Trust me, I know all about that. Amanda, I apologize. When things are right, I'll make it up to you. If you'll give me the chance.

Amanda: I'll hold you to that. 'Till then, I hope you don't mind if I play the field to fill the gaps...

Damien looks over his shoulder, Josh is headed back to the table. Amanda smiles.

Damien: Do what you must. The question is: Can he?

Amanda: (starts walking past Damien) If he plays the game, we'll see. Truth is, he's cool... (looks back at Damien) ...But, he's got none of your fire.

Damien watches with a smile as Amanda, and her ass, walk away.

Damien: (shakes his head) ...What a night.

BOOOOOM!!!!!

A deafening explosion rings in all ears as the dark night is illuminated by the fire of a hundred hells. Damien is nearly knocked off his feet as his eyes spread wide to take in the sight. An enormous cloud of fire and smoke rises to the heavens. Damien stands over an awakened city that never sleeps. As he gains his footing he hears a sound, a deep rumbling a throaty growl fills the night. Something has come to the city, something big.

(You know how she got in those pants...)
