Description I recommend hitting the "full view".

Today's work. This is going to be the cover for the November issue of 85 South magazine. It's watercolour, 18" by 24".
In the square of the town I live in is this statue of Marquis "Frenchy" de LaFayette on a pedestal surrounded by a fountain - I understand he's the town founder or something, which is a bit odd since the number of French people in this city could comfortably fit in an empty tin of cat food.
Anyway, the 85 South editors wanted something local - I suggested a few other locations, but they finally settled on the statue of LaFayette. They also asked that I paint it in fall colours to suit November.

I admit that I know very little about him, even though I'm kind of a history buff.  I don't think many people here know much about him, but there he stands on the square.  I think he's seen around here as kind of a famous diplomat that went through town at one time or another, rather than an actual town founder.  As I say, Frenchies are a bit of a rarity around here - the only one I can think of offhand is the publisher of the magazine for which this served as cover.

Chances are pretty good that we've run into one another, then. I own the 809 Gallery of Art on Hill Street.

I used to work at Piggly Wiggly over by Lee's Crossing. You go there?

Sorry for the late reply... I am about 46 I think. I graduated LHS in 1981. I shop at that Pig all the time - my bank's in there and stays open late.

Thank you SO much! This one turned out to be a big deal because it went to the museum (I'm still patiently waiting for my cheque from them... ). I'm so glad you like it - I was pleasantly surprised at how much easier it is to paint a statue than a regular person.

Thank you very much! It was a really strange feeling last night - I went to the museum's opening of their big new Warhol exhibit, and there was LaFayette, right next to Warhol. It was an incredible feeling. ^_^

theancientofdays In reply to Raven5695 [2008-10-13 08:13:13 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much! Statues, I've found, are a lot easier than actual people - real people aren't as shiney so I could just leave the highlights on this bright white. And of course the colours are a lot easier. I cheated on the water - it's acrylic.

Raven5695 In reply to theancientofdays [2008-10-13 23:26:57 +0000 UTC]

ive actually never tried doing a statue so i wouldnt know if its easier for me, it probably is though. i should give it a shot sometime haha we all cheat sometimes

theancientofdays In reply to Raven5695 [2008-10-15 10:29:16 +0000 UTC]

The big plus is that you don't have to worry about colour as much as with real people.

theancientofdays In reply to dragonC [2008-10-12 09:23:14 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much! ^_^ That part is acrylic, so I cheated a little. If I'd tried spatter like that in watercolour, the underlying colours would have bled right through the paint so it wouldn't have shown up.

theancientofdays In reply to Floreyn [2008-10-10 12:37:42 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, I think. The statue was really not too difficult to paint once I mixed that weird colour. I painted the statue with the paper upside-down. It seemed to work pretty well. ^_^

Thank you very much! Once I mixed that strange bronzy colour for the statue, the rest was really pretty simple. I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly it went. ^_^

Well, I had to do something at least reasonably good. It's a magazine cover, after all. Glad you like it - I had to kind of play the autumn colours by ear because the leaves haven't turned here yet.

Thanks - we'll see. Pepper doesn't like it as much as I do. When I price things I usually ask her advice, and we were thinking two very different prices on this one.
