This makes me wish I had a "friend" hanging from EVERYthing I serve food and beverage in. This is amazing to look at. The idea of moment in this creature is certainly loud and clear.

Completed by you in what sense?...photographing and uploading the image? I'm also into ceramics now and it is so much FUN

Well, as I say, it was a group effort. Steven the potter threw the pot, to which I added the foot (I'm a little better at feet and rims), and then our sculptor, Hannah, built the octopus. I'm a glazemaster (not really much of a potter, but I know my glazes), so I handled that as well. I'll probably be able to add more of my pottery on DA now that we have a good kiln and a nice working clay station.

Thanks - it took a long time and we each applied a little of our knowledge to make this one work. I am having a hard time getting Hannah back in to sculpt, but I sure hope she does soon.

Thanks! That glaze is a little hard to work with sometimes because it has a tendency to run, but it worked out pretty well on this piece.

Well, our sculptor (she's responsible for the octopus sculpture) isn't around as much as we'd like, but I'm hoping we can get her to add things to other thrown pieces soon.

that's so cool! is the cup actually used for drinking purposes? i don't know much about ceramics, but i assume there would have to be some glaze painted on to make the cup safely drinkable [?]

there should be a octopus on every cup in the world.

Thanks! Yes, we're careful about the glazes to make sure we use or mix glazes that are foodsafe.

This is so cool! I've always wanted to do some sculpture stuff in ceramics, but never got around to doing it. The octopus is just so much fun!
How tall is the piece?

theancientofdays In reply to Vonsiel [2011-12-27 01:20:41 +0000 UTC]

This is a pretty fair-sized cup; it's about seven inches tall.

The texture and the overall look of that octopus is amazing. Looks like it's really crawling out of the cup and you just took a photo.

Agreed - our sculptor has a knack for very lifelike smaller creations. Now if I can just get her to come in and work more often...

Scary
Drinking out of a cup with the octopus looking at you like that
The octopus also acts like a sort of handle doesn't it?

Nicely done though

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

theancientofdays In reply to weeknie [2011-12-27 01:19:52 +0000 UTC]

Thanks - the glazes were applied thickly enough that the octopus can be used as a handle. We were really careful in both the greenware and bisque stages not to move this piece around too much. It's pretty solid after the glaze fire, though.
