I really don't put it past the Sonic fandom to bitch and piss about this; aside from a few inherently bad games and such, they tend to cry over a lot of trivial issues.
Overall I can see why, I mean it looks like they want to make Sonic look "real" and in essence, trying to really make a bizarre world applicable to reality is not something I would say easily done. It's why things like Dragon Ball or Super Mario could never shoot off. The characters and worlds are just too off from reality to be in reality if that makes sense.
But none-the-less I'm curious since this is becoming serious.

I think the design is alright...his hands and feet are just....weirding me out because they're in proportion with his body and I wasn't expecting THAT

I don't think it works, mostly because even though his arms and legs are normal human proportions, his head is still a massive cartoon balloon. Of course, you can't shrink his head down without losing the iconic silhouette, but as long as his head is ~30-40% of his height, no amount of realistic muscle is going to make him feel more real; it's going to push him further and further into the uncanny valley.

As someone who was a Nintendo kid growing up (though I did play some of Sonic 1-3 at stores and friends' houses, but I didn't actually own a Genesis) and likes the old Sonic games but has never played any of the newer ones, I just find it highly entertaining to watch people freak out over a movie poster.

I think I'm at that age where it is hard to give a crap anymore. I've had too many of my favorite franchises screw up their character designs to even care at this point. I remember back when I was a teen, I used to nerd rage over Rareware switching to Microsoft and ruining the Banjo franchise.
If they decide to make Sonic look horrible (he doesn't look 'too' bad' from the silhouette), then that will just give the internet more fodder for memes and jokes. And at least it won't be as bad as the Super Mario Bros. Movie..
