Description
Salut!
And welcome back to yet another episode of DesignSpeak! And yeah...this is certainly turning into a weekly thing, aha! It wasn't my intention like I said in the past episode. But I like that kind of pace. Makes it feel like this could be something to look forward to every week! Don't know what you guys think.
But enough about that! I'm sure you know the drill, but for those stumbling onto this for the first time (especially you who's seeing this in 2030), this is where I talk about the designs of my characters! While the first few would be focusing on my OC Chloe (and don't worry, the profile will be coming soon), I will eventually talk about my other characters. Yep, she's not the only one.
Anyways, without further ado, let's begin!
As I have hinted in the last episode, there were more designs that I created for Chloe in the year of our Lord 2020. That was where I stumbled onto many ideas once I found a theme and motif for my character. As it turns out, quite a lot were made, and this is one of them. Now, this would be the first time you've seen this for those of you on dA. But back when it was completed, this was probably the most complimented look of all. I believe it's perhaps because this was my first proper fight attire with an identity, and compared to the other styles I have for her, this is the most functional looking of her outfits. Which got me thinking of the age-old dilemma that many architects couldn't answer.
Form over Function? Or Function over Form?
It's something that has been argued for years. In this case of outfits, if something looks beautiful, but doesn't actually work correctly, is it considered successful? If the attire does what it's made to do but is aesthetically "unfortunate," is it successful? In truth, it depends. Part of a good design is to push the boundaries, which often means that to get over that first hump, something may look super cool but will not function the way it should. That doesn't mean it's considered a failure, far from it. But I like to be just a bit more inspired when it comes to my designs. If anything, Chloe isn't the type to be considered "bland."
This one actually has something in common to the previous design in Ep2. And those who have read through it might have picked it up already. Yes, this was again inspired by Blake from RWBY. I don't know why I am drawn to that character the most out of the rest of the cast, but I really dig her designs. This one takes some cues from her Volume 5 outfit, from the turtle neck-style collar of her top to the pants and heels. Since she had the coat on the last commission, I went with just leaving it out, just showing her off when she's in action.
Regarding the top, I decided on keeping the general look of a top like Blake's but molded it into something with a bit more "wrestler" feel. Part of that design was taken from Rhea Ripley's attire from when she was in the Mae Young Classic tournament (jeez, looking back then, the change is drastic). Added with the butterfly wing aesthetic, that print was added to the details. It would be hard to add that onto the pants themselves, but I'm glad that detail was included.
Since I mentioned the Vol 5 Blake inspiration, the pants probably made sense. This was a tricky venture since Blake's were thigh-high heeled boots. Considering that Chloe doesn't wear that to the ring, it was challenging to tweak the design into something unique. I was looking for a mix of the shin/instep pads and the stirrup leggings for the bottom part of it. This was the outcome when I gave the written description to the artist. He did really well, considering I wasn't so sure how that mix would end up. One person made the comment that they looked like gymnastic pants. Well, considering the fighting style she uses, they ain't too far off.
Compared to the other outfits I've done, this was the most simple to make. And yet, it remains a novel and exciting design for some. Missed the opportunity to use the sleeves from the first attire, but oh well. Got to use them again someday, though.
This is the attire you'll mostly see her in when she's fighting. Mainly because others prefer that look, but it helps that I love it also. A mega-hit that I hope to replicate one day.
Though maybe the other designs could fulfill the role...
