I'm really happy that I was chosen to cover Zen Art for my buddhism course because I found this.

This is my informed, but by no means official, understanding of this saying: Enlightenment is not something that, once achieved, completely changes one's life, at least outwardly. There are still chores to do, and all of the daily trials of life remain. What changes is one's attitude, so that they are not simply things to be endured but moments to be cherished.

I think what it means is that once you have reached enlightenment, the only thing that has changed about you is inside of you. Β Outside is still the same. Β Even if you have found true, inner peace, there are still things to be done. Β You have just come to be more accepting of the world around you, and take them as they come. Β As my friends down in Florida, who are Buddhists, always say, take life one thing at a time, one day at a time; just keep on keeping on. Β Big Mac's constant "Eeeyup" is true zen. Β He accepts things as they come, and just keeps on doing what he knows has to be done.

Great Pic and very suitable for Big Mac
Loved both quotes.
Honestly, considering all the trouble that his sisters and their friends cause, he must either be Zen or delusional to have the laid back attitude he has.

"Mr. Ed will never speak, unless he has something to say."
Big Mac definitely seems like he could have some Zen going on. He hardly seems preoccupied by the troubles or pleasures of daily life.

That is not right. after reaching true nirvana, no mater way happens in your life, you will not suffer and you will not be reborn.

We each die a thousand deaths and are reborn a thousand times throughout our lives (as we change and alter ourselves and become different people than we were). Once we attain enlightenment, we settle into our true selves and no longer need to change, merely to flow and seek growth. We effectively become spiritually invulnerable as the death and rebirth of our persona becomes no longer unnecessary for growth to occur within our souls.
(at least I think that's what it means)

TwiWrite-Flare In reply to GiromCalica [2013-02-25 23:16:06 +0000 UTC]
Not really sure what that has to do with anything. Enlightenment is for everyone and is not really a question of religion. It's not truly about reincarnation so much as it is about the metaphorical death and rebirth that we go through throughout our lives.
Example: I am not the same person that I was when I was in high school, nor am I the same personal that I was in college. I am someone completely new and in ten years, I will again (likely) be someone new once again until I finally find my own enlightenment.

I get it.
I am a whinny little douche in my early life, then the present I'm changing my ways and slowly becoming more sense and smart, and then in the future I might still change into a WAY better self than as of now and maybe I'll be a success. Did I interpret that right?

TwiWrite-Flare In reply to GiromCalica [2013-02-26 23:42:39 +0000 UTC]
That sounds about right. The ultimate goal is always to cut out the bad and the negative that is inside of us so that all that their is room for is intellectual, spiritual, and emotional growth. Also to attain inner peace. To find complete contentment in who and what we are weather that is a successful business person or a simple farmer (I personally think that it would be easier for the farmer to find this sort of enlightenment, but even a business person could do it).
The pursuit of true enlightenment is a way of teaching ourselves not to let the world around us crush us every time something crazy happens. It helps us not to fly off the handle and get angry or sad when it isn't necessarily (and preferably remain in control even when it IS necessary).
I admit that I don't really know at what point one truly attains enlightenment (or even if TRUE enlightenment is even attainable to human beings), but what I do know is that the idea is to pursue that ultimate goal so that we can become the best people that we can be.

So it means that if you're in the middle of an armed robbery or other dangerous thing happening, you should always stay calm and ignore since it will end sooner or later? I get it now.
PS: Why do these kinds of arguments or explanations happen everyday?

It's complicate. technically you and I don't exist now. Enlightenment in truly understanding that fact and the nature of the the universe.

Like I said complicate, but it matters not. The point made by the pic. is this enlightenment dose not change who you are just how you look at the world. You live your life as usual except you don't suffer because you understand the greatest truth and are truly happy no mater what happens.

I think the basic idea is that enlightened people have the same chores and problems as the rest of us. The difference is that enlightened people don't take those problems personally.

It's ok, As the a famous Buddhist was quoited "find the good* in your religion". As long as you are a good, kind, and compassionate person that is all that early matters to a buddhist.
