Description Another fun project to be a very small part of. I just noticed it's coming out soon and I forgot to share anything from it. I was asked to come in on the face and sculpting a mask-less portrait of Steve for the figure (That awesome, detailed mask was sculpted by NECA's team, not me. I'm not sure who, otherwise I'd give credit).

This was based on Cap from "Civil War". I found Evans to be a really difficult guy to sculpt well, but....I suppose they all are. You just never know what you're in for! That's the excitement... and dread.

You can see the finished toy here: news.toyark.com/2018/03/14/pac…

Holy shit you're the god damn genius who sculpted the head? Dude, Neca cap is one of the coolest figures I have, freaking rock on my guy!

Haha! Well, thanks very much. I'm only one of the team that worked on sculpting him. The awesome mask was sculpted by another NECA artist, and they did an amazing job. Glad you like it!

Absolutely magnificent!! You did a perfect job! What materials did you use to sculpt this?

Thank you, very kindly!
I sculpt most of my faces in hard wax. It's great for getting a likeness zeroed in and achieving the detail necessary for collectibles.

Neat! I've used Sculpey and Apoxie Sculpt, so I was curious. I'll keep hard wax in mind in the future!

ahh! I tried to sculpt him once upon time, but realized sculpting portrait likenesses is so intensely difficult and maddening. What is that mask made from? That precision detail had to come from technology right?

TrevorGrove In reply to Zavellart [2018-09-07 17:31:20 +0000 UTC]

He is a tough face! Likenesses are indeed maddening. The more you do it the more fun it eventually becomes, but it is such a technical process that it can be off putting at times.
The mask here was sculpted by NECA's artists, but man, I think it was actually made by hand. It's incredible what their guys can do. They do use digital artists, but a lot of their work is made by hand....stunning. Love that someone is still doing traditional sculpture for toys. It's very rare, now.

Amazing work! Is the helmet hand made or is it a 3d print?

Thank you! The helmet was made by NECA, and I think they made it by hand....seriously fantastic work....It's so hard to do things like that by hand.

oh man you always make such incredible detail! How you made the fabric detail on the mask so perfect and uniform is just crazy good! if you ever make a sculpting tutorial book I would totally buy a copy.

TrevorGrove In reply to aachi-chan [2018-03-16 04:30:47 +0000 UTC]

Haha. I tried to point out that the mask was sculpted by another artist (I'm not sure who, but they DID do an incredible job. Just stunning). That was a big reason I was hesitant to share this project, because I hate to think of the other artist thinking I'm taking credit for their work. Thanks very much, though! I do need to invest time in doing some kind of tutorials or videos, because I've been asked quite a bit.

oh sorry! I must have missed that part. ^_^;; I kind of jump around a lot when I read when I'm tired.
Well your faces are absolutely remarkable! They look so perfectly like the people you base them off of. I especially like the way you do hair and fur. I would especially love it if you made a tutorial on that

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TrevorGrove In reply to aachi-chan [2018-03-16 04:50:44 +0000 UTC]

Oh, no worries at all! I just hate to think of any artist seeing their work here and thinking I took credit for it. This kind of work is such a collaborative effort, it can be hard to articulate who did what! I just always like everyone to get their proper credit.
Thanks again! I will try to do some kind of tutorial eventually. A specific think about hair and fur and things like that would be cool. To be honest, I'm not sure how I do things, so it's kind of weird to try to be self-aware while working.

aachi-chan In reply to TrevorGrove [2018-03-16 05:02:31 +0000 UTC]

yeah I can understand.  You get so used to making stuff that you don't have to pay attention anymore. Like trying to tell someone how to drive on snow and icy roads lol. You know how to do it from experience but its hard to put into words to tell someone who's new to it.

TrevorGrove In reply to aachi-chan [2018-03-16 05:05:33 +0000 UTC]

You nailed it. That's the best way to put it. I'm too lazy with setting up a camera to do a time-lapse, but that would probably be the best way to show how I do some things.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

aachi-chan In reply to TrevorGrove [2018-03-16 22:31:25 +0000 UTC]

yeah plus it's tricky to stay in the camera area with sculpting. I tried it using a camera while sculpting before and then I realized how often I'll get a sculpture up close to my face while I'm working lol

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TrevorGrove In reply to aachi-chan [2018-03-16 23:30:00 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that was what I feared would happen! I didn't know how to get a close enough in-focus shot while working naturally.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

aachi-chan In reply to TrevorGrove [2018-03-17 01:45:57 +0000 UTC]

yeah especially when using just a webcam as a video recorder. That's what I did and it was never in focus >.< there must be something that's made more for up close videos that could keep everything in focus though. Although, these days I'm not sure what would even be better, a camcorder or a good camera with video lol

TrevorGrove In reply to aachi-chan [2018-03-17 04:51:40 +0000 UTC]

Yeah! I'm sure there is a great device for it, and probably a pretty simple way to set it all up, but I am so tech-dumb. These days, you can probably do something really nice just with a phone. Ha!

aachi-chan In reply to TrevorGrove [2018-03-17 06:29:33 +0000 UTC]

lol yeah except you'd have to figure out how to get it to be propped up and stay still. Half the time my phone slips out of my hand just when I'm using it normally lol

TrevorGrove In reply to aachi-chan [2018-03-17 06:32:43 +0000 UTC]

There's only one solution....drones holding phones filming from afar.
