It was official: Honey and Fennel began their studies together. Since both had already dabbled in with bubble blowing, they decided to move on to dowsing. Typically this magic was used to locate bodies of water, both big and small. After a session of brainstorming, they decided to take their studies to the ocean. Here they would have a surefire understanding of how this particular magic felt when properly executed. After lounging on the sand and commenting about the lingering warmth despite the season, they began their lesson.
Fennel went first while Honey remained a decent distance away to observe. He approached the beach face as the waves receded and tied a blindfold around his head. From here he began to think back to the text he had read prior and formed his focus around the books guidance. The exercise they had come up was simple; they were to focus their attention onto the ocean and familiarize themselves with how the magic weaved within each wave. In theory, they would be able to sense when the tide rolled in and avoid the cold winter waves. It was a type of incentive that would, hopefully, encourage them to get better.
Fennel prepared for the first surge of water, talons effortlessly parting the saturated sand. His attention fell upon the ocean as his magic glands sparked to life. The bright blue sighed through the cloth until the world suddenly fell dull. The lingering warmth of the sand, the muffled cry of the bird, the breeze that rolled off the ocean-- it all felt grey in a sense. The only thing that truly stood out was the scent of the ocean and a charged vibe that Fennel instinctively knew as water.
He was, to say the least, overcome by the sudden distortion of his senses. The first surge rolled forward catching the dumbstruck Fennel off guard. Sea foam greeted his claws causing them to curl away in surprise and a grave chilling sensation rippled through his body. Fennel produced an unpleasant growl which rose into an exclamation of shock, "C-cold!" The quad cringed for a brief moment and slightly backed away from the swash zone before returning to his original position. This was going to take a bit more practice than he had originally thought.
Fennel proceeded to repeat the process, most times failing, other times proving successful. Oftentimes the quad would get splashed by water when he let his mind wander. He wondered about a number of things ranging from the Nook, to his friends, his future goals, his rival and even on occasion, Honey. When it came to her he fell victim to the powerful vice of curiosity. Part of Fennel felt surprised by this interest towards his study partner. Normally he worked alone and would go to great lengths to make sure of it, yet here he was practicing magic with this recently made acquaintance. Something about having to take the time and endure being around another seemed to encourage that once dim flame of curiosity to grow. What was Honey's story? What was her Goals? Fears? Preferences?
Why was she so... strange... compared to the others?
A final splash rolled over his claws causing the quad to snap back to reality. After his bounty of failed attempts it was time for him to take a break. He backed away from the spot he had been practicing and watched as his footprints were washed away. When they were completely gone he turned to Honey and gave her a silent, yet firm nod.
It was his partner's turn now.
Well, after the theory comes practice and boy, does Fennel need plenty of that... though he's not going to get anywhere if he keeps letting his mind wander.
